Work Experience and changing careers. advice

    Right where to start.

I'm working in a Network support job at the at the moment and I'm getting really fed up with it. I went back to college to do IT a few years ago because it was where the big money was and i was working night shift in a factory job, but when i finished my course IT in ireland had gone belly up as you all know.
since college all my IT jobs have involved working Shift and doing nights and weekends!!
Now the company I'm with is moving their IT support to Slovacia (Cheap labour) so i'm being laid off in a few months.

The career i want to get into is the /digital/analog CCTV installation/maintainance and this aspect of security. My shift allows me a full week off every month.
I was wondering if I was to approch one of these companies to let me work with them for this one week a month for free to get some work experience in the area before i go to do the course that FAS run for this which runs for 5 months i think.

Any thoughts and opinions would be appreciated.

I really don't want to stay in IT because its making me miserable.

Sounds like a good idea. (the working there one week a month). I can't see many places refusing a free employee.
What you should do is ring the company you pick from the yellow pages/wherever, as kfor the name of the HR manager as you want to send them some information on a seminar being held in teh next couple of months. You'll get the name no problem.
Call back 30mins or an hour later and ask for the manager by name. They'll ask who you are and what it's in connection with (tell them it's about a position in the company or whatever).
You should get put straight through to the HR manager. Put forward your position and offer. I wouldn't say that I was willing to work for free straight off. Say something like half the normal weekly wage. Working for free is your trump card, only use it if they're a top class company and you'd really like to work for them. You'll get an interview quite quickly I'd say.
I can't see you having to call more than 10 companies before you get a job from it.
