DVD coasters

I, along with my mates (still think they are - I ordered the last batch :D ) have been burned with batches of bad DVD-Rs. The last batch was in 50's and I took 100, (feel guilty because most of mine were useable) some took just 50. Some of the 50's are 80% coasters some 30%. All fail on first read at some point on the disc and its retries. I reckon 50% of the disks are suitable for movies only where you don't mind missing 30s - 0.5 hr. Basically 50% usable only for movies - maybe 10% suitable for data - but I wouldn't like to depend on a backup I've verified a year from now.

It strikes me that these disks could be still used to store maybe 2gb of data if it was possible to burn a logical raidset onto them - i.e. you burn everything 2 - 3 times - and with the appropriate software you can get back the data. This would obviously be just for multi-media and not for critical data.

Anyone know of any software that can do this?

    Accusations of skin-flint - cheap bastard - etc. don't bother I admit it :D

could you tell us where you bought these discs so others wont have the same misfortune?

    and what brand are they.

If possible, tell us the media identifer thingy. I'll grab the proggy that finds that out for ya. Check back on this post in 2 mins, i'll edit it.

    EDIT: http://www.dvdinfopro.com/

It was here, http://www.blankdiscshop.co.uk, however, I'm not going to bad-mouth them. They were advertising B-grade discs at the same time- now that I think about it - which I suspect got mixed-up my order - so I would say this was just a mix up and I'm due 200 good discs.

I will verify this at a future date.

They are a very reputable company, but i think people still should know if there was a dodgy batch of discs. If i knew i had burnt stuff onto discs that might go dodgy, i'd want to know asap, so i can rescue what i can.

So, bearing that in mind, would you be able to tell us what you ordered, and what you think you may have recieved. Something isn't right, and no-one else should get caught out by accidentally ordering some dodgy discs. The media code should be identified by the proggy i linked, and that would give us the best idea as to what manufacturer (not reseller) made the discs, which would help a LOT.

They are a very reputable company,
I now have to agree as it turns out my mates have ordered from them mainly without any probs going back 6 months. It was a real bummer to end up with crap disks when it came to my turn. I reckon it was a mixup in dispatch - I only posted this because I never got a reply to my one and only email I sent them to complain. The fact that I never got a return failure, leads me to believe that they have issues with their mail-server in addition to erroneous dispatch! But hell whose perfect?

Erm but what disc did you order? And what disc did you get?

Sorry I'd forgotten - had get the original order confirmation from my email in work - er I ordered after working hours ;)

They were these {DV 3106} Optodisc Unbranded 1x/2x DVD-R in spindle tubs of 50. Dunno if they still have these or not - their website is down.

Asking around today - it turns out there may only be 3 bad spindles out of 8. I've had some problems - but then again I burned them at 2x. Initially I was cautious and burned them at 1x speed.

They were selling B-grades at the same time - reckon these could have gotten mixed up with the batch.

Couldn't get that disk_Id thinggy to work. :(

You didn't say what burner you have.
    From the website:
This disc will write at only 1x on the Pioneer A05/105, A06/106, A07/107,

NEC 2500a DVD writer and Liteon 811s DVDRW drives will write this disc at 2x.

It's MAT****A DVD-RAM SW9581. So initially I only burned at one speed. After about 10 discs a burn was started accidently that was two speed. However, this worked. Only later did I realise that this may cause minor irregulaties in the burn. Nothing I'm too worried about tbh.

A mate of mine said they were ropey. I took some of his off him and sure enough they were piss-poor. This is why I theorize about the B-grade mixup. Do you think they will mind if I apply sand-paper to the coasters when I'm returning them? - there's er client information recorded on them :o

Anyone done returns to these guys?

Might make em not accept them back. Ask them first. I'd say they'd have no problem, but be sure to ask first. Try getting the "Datawrite (8x) DVD+R in Spindle Tubs of 25" for the next batch. They are supposedly quite good discs. You can pick up 25 dvd cases for Sterling2.35 aswell, so thats damn cheap for 8x discs in DVD cases.

I've ordered from them before and was happy with what I got. [EDIT: My mistake, I was thinking of dvd-and-media.co.uk who are up in NI. However SVP do indeed have a very good reputation.]

On the other hand I have also ordered from Komplett (200 very cheap discs) and got two very bad batches. However, Komplett being Komplett they sent me out 100 new free good DVDRs, which more than compensated for the bad ones. Didn't require the bad ones back...

At this stage I've ordered about 250+ Bulkpaq Orange 4x DVD's from svp.co.uk, only 3 coasters but thats due to what I was trying to burn (it never worked) otherwise I'm well impressed with them.

SVP so far have been impeccable. The delay so far was one involved in the original order turns out to be a tosser. I've finally "included-him-out" of the return. And this should start things moving again.

Yeah happened to me before. Ain't the boards software great :)

Matsush1ta is great for stealing and pasting ideas of truly great and innovative electronics companies :(

Sadly 'tis true and inevitable. In technology, it can often make more sense to rip-off an idea make the bucks now and have your legal team face the music in a few years :(

Just wasn't aware of Matsush1ta being one of the offenders {quick look on the web} hmm. Not quite what you we're talking about. But not good. Prefer if you have a genuine rant on this that you post a seperate thread, or PM on details, but I just can't see this being strictly on subject.

This has taken an age to resolve - thank's to trying to co-ordinate with the people I bought with.

There was a further hitch, for which I was to blame and will not go into detail here.

I will just say this, SVP really went out of their way to provide customer service. Will definitely be ordering here again.

SVP are always great to deal with. I've done over £600 Stg of business with them with perfect service every time.

As a rule I will only buy decent quality media. Even if the cheap stuff burns fine (which it normally does) it's far more likely to fail in 6 months time.

One thing you could also consider is checking your manufacturers support site ti see if there is a firmware upgrade for your drive. Firmware upgrades for DVD drives sometimes include increased support for various different media.
(NB. If you do decide to flash your drive be careful.)

Me too. A lot of my cheap cdrs from years back have failed, good media may cost twice the price but that is still pretty cheap per disc. Has anybody bought the scratch-proof dvds from SVP? How resistant are they?

I bought a 100 disks about 18 months ago locally. They were the cheapest in Dublin at the time; just under 1 Euro each. Data I burned I put in cd cases and video I burned went into movie cases. Now many of the data disks take many retries or fail. The video disks play fine. (It dark in them cases!)

Moral of the story - keep the cheap disks down a salt-mine or something. I do agree the more expensive disks sun-bathe far better.
