    Hey , try hijack this:

    http://www.spychecker.com/download/download_hijackthis.html

or go start-> run. Type msconfig. hit return and click startup tab and unselect anything that looks suspicious there. Heck take everything off if your confident. I would recommend hijack this though as it finds other places that things may start up but if your system needs a startup file to run in order to run properly , leave it on..say things like Printer utilities etc, but your pc should still start up fine with everything taken. You can always bring back a backup that hijack this creates automatically if anything goes wrong.

    Have fun.

If you are in Windows XP open up the task manager (press Ctrl Alt Del) and select the "Processes" tab (can't remember how to do it in previous versions of Windows).

Click on the column heading that says CPU. That will sort out all your processes by order of CPU usage. You may have to click twice to get the most usage at the top of the column. Now have a look at what processes are using your CPU time when the computer is idle. The only process that should be using any of your CPU is the System Idle process which is a blank process that runs when nothing else is simply because at least one process has to be running.

If there is anything else using a lot of CPU time tell us what it is ...

not a bad idea to post a list of services here, never thought of that.

Does anyone know what exactly the service called initiated by the sasser and the msblast worm?

Ok guys and gals, Take everything i commented about Out, the ones with the Numbers that you get to tick in hijackthis. I just commented on the processes too but you can't do much with them.

Just take out the ones i've commented on at all, the ones with the numbers at the start

Yeah i know its the RPS or RPC but does the actual application not come up with a seperate process? just not too sure about sasser

Sasser has a pile of possible processes - check out the end of this page (I didn't realise there were so many). then some of the other variants add more (listed here. It's the subtle differences with legitimate process names that make them harder to spot except by what they actually do (but obviously that's the point I suppose)

good place to start if you having problems with your machine and you suspect you have a virus is this site

    http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/

Download the stinger app and run it.. if you have any of the comman virus's it will pick them up and remove them.. remember to patch your machine before/after you have done this.. its no godo removing the blaster worm and then hooking up your pc to the interweb unpatched with no firewall.. might seem obvious but... ;)

    Gubby,

I was looking at the list of processes that you posted a while back and C:\WINNT\system32\csrsss.exe is not right - do a google to find out more !

C:\WINNT\system32\csrss.exe (two 's' not three before the .exe) on the other hand would be legitimate - "Windows client server run-time subsystem handles Windows and graphics functions for all subsystems" (www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary)

C:\WINNT\system32\internat.exe is listed on the above site as "Application that provides multi-language support on keyboards for Microsoft Windows programs."

If your problem is still not solved look in the processes tab in task manager.
Delete all processes one by one. Any system processes you will not be allowed delete. After deleting each one check the performance tab. If the 100% has dropped then the process last deleted is causing it.

If so, get the name of the process and enter into google.

Hi just a few things I noticed: might help for future debugging

DLA/tfswctl = has to do with a prog.... Drive Letter Access (DLA) a utility that lets you drag-and-drop files from your hard drive to your CD or DVD recorder. Installed with SONIC Recording Software. On Dell machines. Sometimes doesn't work properly with certain DVDs.

dsentry.exe = is a prog provided by Dell. It stops the autorun application from executing on disc insertion.

    WinPatrol.exe = Spyware detection prog
