I recently ordered parts for a pc i'm building from Jes [last friday] but i think there could be a problem.

I got a few recommadations for a motherboard but went for MB ATX SA Abit NF7-S V2.0 nForce2 as recommended by Col_loki, but upon veiwing the site today that mother board says
This article was abgekuendigt by the manufacturer and is taken shortly from our assortment. Please no more do not order. The successor boards are the Nf7-s2g and the Nf7-s2
[poorly translated using google]. and is a marked as out of stock.

What do ye recommend? and if/when i change it what would ya recommend it get instead.

    Thanks.

Don't change it for the NF7-S2. Its a much worse board campared to the NF7-S v2.0. http://forum.abit-usa.com/showthread.php?s=&postid=382844

The AN-7 cost about the same and has all the features of the NF7-S v2.0

Yea the AN7 would be my recomendation after the NF7-S v2.0 aswell.

As Ciaran said the NF7-S2 isint as good a board at all.

    Thanks for the replys.

I sent jes and email asking for a swap. If they agree and they shoud considering i've already paid would this be the mother board i'd be looking for.

MB ATX SA Abit AN7, nForce2 Ultra 400

    Thanks again

    Yep, thats the one.

They replyed asking if i wanted the NF7-S2 as a replacement but i told them i wanted the AN7 instead, then i got an email saying thats it been sent out to GLS.

I've heard all the problems to do with GLS but are they more to do with dublin then rest of country [as i'm in Tipp]?

    Thanks

all of Jes's deliveries are GLS. They're ok unless something goes wrong, then you'll be tearing your hair out to get any satisfaction from them.

Well i asked them to change it but Jes ignored my request and sent me out the MB ATX SA Abit NF7-S2G nForce2 Ultra 400 instead.

Just trying to figure out if this board is any good or am i being done over?

I then got a seperate email, which seems from another part of the store saying
We would recommend the Asus A7N8XE-Deluxe, as it is closest to the Abit compared by the performance aspect.

    Thanks

Well thats just great, thanks alot Jes for sending me a mobo that is useless for overclocking eventhough the rest of my pc suits it perfectly.

Thanks a lot pekelly for the info [your info was on the S2G so that was grand.]

There nothing i can do now as its already been sent out according to Jes so i'm stuck with abits attempt of a motherboard!!

Send it back when you get it, don't stand for something like that.

absolutely. if you didnt ask for it, and dont want it, why would you accept it. you pay enough for computer components, make sure you get what you want.

It should arrive by tomorrow or start of next week. I'll send them an email stating that i will return that motherboard and would like it replaced with what i orignally asked for "MB ATX SA Abit AN7, nForce2 Ultra 400". They decided to send me out the cheaper/poorer alternative instead of the more expensive (by 2 euro ffs) and of the same quality board!!

This is my first dealing with Jes but hopefully if they sort it out it won't be my last.

are other components coming in the same parcel. if not you could just refuse it at the door.

Unfortunatly the rest of the pc will be coming with it [bout 500 euros worth] so i wont be turning it away, guess i'll just have to do with emailing them!!

Well GLS delivered the parts today and all are fine but unfort as Jes said i got the NF7-2SG board intead. I sent them an email yesterday complaining again about the wrong board and saying how i will return it, which they repyed saying how they were sorry for their mistake and i should return it using their RMA service.

    Couple of questions though:
    1. Is the NF7-2SG really that bad [i know all of what its missing compared to NF7-2], or is it overcomeable? My parts were bought with intention to overclock [i bought a mobile xp even]. The thing is i would like to start building asap but if i send it back i could be waiting a long time before i can start.

    2. If my only option is to send it back then how would you suggest i do it? [the fastest and safest would be best!]

    Thanks for any help.

Good to see jes has no problem with returning stuff.

There is No multiplier adjustment on the NF7-S2. This means you will only be able to change the FSB to overclock. You will not get any where near the speeds you could get on the Sv2.0, compared to the S2.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,839 ✭✭✭balkieb2002

What speeds could i hope for with the board?

tis good that jes accept returns only prob i really would like to start builing asap so trying to hold off on returning it.

The rest of the system i bought was:
    AMD Athlon XP-Mobile 2400+
    Samsung SATA 160GB HD
    DDR PC400 512mb TwinMOS CL2,5
    Nezteil Tagen 380W

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,225 ✭✭✭Ciaran500

With TwinMOS ram you wouldn't get the FSB much over 210 (if your lucky). This means you would get an overclock of a little over 100mhz.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,839 ✭✭✭balkieb2002

I read that in a future bios update they might include the multiplier controls.

If they did this what increase could i hope for?

    Thanx again for your help.

you could ask if they would do an advance RMA seeing as it was their fault. basically you would buy the board you originally wanted and they ship it straight away. then you return the one you didnt want and they credit that back to your card when they get it.

explaining the above to them in german might be tricky.

Yeah that would be a lot handier but as you said explaining that might be the problem though they have improved their english correspondence.
Its really annoying having all the parts in front of me now [like not being allowed near your presents @ christmas!!] but it will be worse waiting about 2 weeks or more to get the replacement motherboard from Germany if i went the normal way.

Its a lot of hassle to get replacement as well as costing me more money to send it back to them though the long run advantage of new mother board would prob outweigh it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,225 ✭✭✭Ciaran500

The average overclock for the 2400+ is about 2.5ghz. Thats an extra 600mhz on the standard speed of the 2400+ and some people are hitting 2.6ghz and 2.7ghz on the NF7-S v2.0.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,839 ✭✭✭balkieb2002

    Thanx for the info Ciaran500.

I've sent GLS an email asking the price of returning it to germany, if its not too dear then i'll send it back and get the one i'm looking for espec for 600mhz or more increase.

    hey balkie hows things
ive got the same ram as you, i wouldnd worry about over clocking the fsb or the ram as the chip is unlocked, just change the multiplier to 13 or 14 instead of the default 11. then do what i did, change the ram timings from 2.5-2-3-7 to 2-2-2-6.
a lot of people with the mobile 2500+ are hitting 2.6 some are 2.7 i suppose it depends on the cooler they are using. thats a mad increase from the original 1.8ghz

Hey steven, i'm grand howz u? U goin back this year?

Back on topic: About my situation where at least they offered you a choice of boards, they just sent me out the wrong board. The thing is though i have yet to return my board yet and are contemplating keeping it, my reason is below.

The problem with that board is it sets a default multiplier for the processor meaning i could hopes for speeds of 1.2ghz @ max, but after enquiring around the net i found a way around this. I'm currently wire-modding it so that it sets a higher default multiplier and higher default vcore, meaning my new default speed should be around the 1.9ghz mark with overclock possibiltes of up or over 2.5ghz.

If ya want ne more info just let me know.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,219 ✭✭✭Redrocket

if your happy with wiring the board up that way and if you're sure it will work, then go for it
did you find out what that board will set as the default multiplier on the mobile xp?
is there a bios update you can get for the board that will allow you to change multipliers?

    repeating maths on monday morning..............

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,839 ✭✭✭balkieb2002

Been getting alot of helpful advice here so more confindent about attempting it.

It think it defaults @ the lowest multiplier [6 afaik], meaning a poor performance [bout 1.2ghz].
No word on a bios update for the board yet though i'm hoping for one in the near future.

I've just put in the heatsink now so only time will tell if it works [thats after i put the rest of the pc together of course ;) ]

Good luck on monday by the way and hope to see ya back next year.
