www.hostelworld.com has a good range of cheap places. The reviews are handy for deciding where to stray as well. I stayed in Hostel Mediterranean (watch the spelling mistakes). It was 10 minutes walk from Placa Catalunya, very clean and only 18 euro a night.

I stayed in Hostal Campi, C/ Canuda 4, more or less on Las Ramblas, €22 a night for a single, and €44 for a double. Very clean simple rooms and great staff.
