Swallows on my gable wall

I was supposed to paint my house over the weekend so I dug out the ladder and set to work until I raised it at the side of the house to discover that there's a swallows nest at the top of the angle on the gable. I could hear the chicks and could see their mother flying around but with the ladder close by, she wouldn't go near the nest til I took the ladder back down again. Can anyone tell me what the nesting period is because I don't want to frighten the mother away or the chicks will just die?

They'll be gone by mid September...

I've always dealt with this in the past by painting close to the nest (trust me, swallows are NOT easily discouraged, as long as you don't touch or damage the nest the mother will come back) and then nipping out to knock down the empty nest and finish it in September...
