go for the 64+ bit one. No doubt about it. It'll be the best thing you've ever spent money on.

Yeh that processor is 64bit and the barebones is 64bit compatible.

I have the same CPU (but the 1MB cache version), it's great, AMD 64s are a great choice at the moment.

What graphics card are you going to use?

    I'll be using a ti4200 or an mx440. Both 128mb versions.

One thing myself and Bloodbath were wondering was will that heatsink fit in the shuttle with the harddrive and dvd-drive in there?

You're into your games so I'd say stick with the Ti4200, an MX440 won't be very good.

Sounds like a good set-up other than that. I'm a fan of the Shuttles myself, but afaik the Biostar ones are pretty good aswell.

    edit:

AFAIK it comes with a cooler:

    here

LOL, was you're other link just an enormous typo then? :D
I think i'll stick with the other barebones as it seems like a decent choice.

[edit] I've noticed on the original barebones that its an nForce3 chipset that means it has on board graphics and if so what gfx card is it equivalent to?

    Heh... Ye pup!

Must say though. Ive read this thread and never noticed that mistake before. It says 'shuttle' in the title and the link is to a biostar...

    Your still a pup though...

@n1ck: Thats gonna be a nice system when ye get it going. I've been looking to get a barebones myself but cash is a bit of a problem at the moment. Tell me how ye get on with the biostar when ye get it. Would be most interested.

no its not onboard graphics, its the nforce3 150 chipset. it allows the following:

    # Support for the HyperTransport bus
    # Support for the AGP 8X bus
    # IDE Interfaces: ATA -33/66/100/133 (3 channels)
    # Support for RAID arrays (levels 0,1 and 0+1)
    # Number of PCI Masters: 5
    # USB 2.0 ports: 6
    # Support for AC'97 2.1
    # 10/100MB Fast Ethernet

as far as i can tell the Biostar 200p doesn't have onboard gfx.

    Will do.

And cheers again quarryman, i had a look and i didnt find anything about on board graphics but just making sure, cause i really don't have a clue. :)

I think quarryman's first post is what's known in the trade as a "joke".

It is intended to provide humour while reading a thread full of dry facts.

actually it was. 13.78 imaginary Euros to the poster with its origin :) (gobby and DC don't count)

btw n1ck, would you consider a Shuttle, i can recommend them as i proud owner.

The barebones i posted i think i will go with as it was recommended by a mate.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,496 ✭✭✭quarryman

fair enough. what are you using for graphics? will it used for gaming?

the onboard graphics is handy if you can get it. if it ain't being used for games at all then you can run it VERY quiet by leaving out a gfx card altogether.

other than that it seems like a nice rig, good luck.

    this is mine btw:

Yeh it will be used for gaming, ive got a ti4200 i'll be putting into it.

Thats a nice little shuttle, the one that my mate picked out i'll stick with though, dont really want to be confusing everything. :)

    # 10/100MB Fast Ethernet

It actually supports 10/100/1000mb fast ethernet so it has gigalan potential.

Quarryman the reason I picked that barebones was to stay inside his budget. The one you linked costs 50 euro more and I don't see any benifits apart from appearance. The nForce chipsets are the best you can get for a64's so it really is a bargain.

So just cancel the cooler nick but make sure you get the artic silver. The order was excluding delivery btw so it should cost you about 550 now including delivery.

Good luck with it and let me know how you get on. It's gonna be a sweet barebones system.

Cheers, 550 should be do-able, i'll post back when i get the money which i havent got atm. :D

This is a really good one for the price and has an excellent display on it but it's socket478 so you would have to use a P4.

I was going to go with this originally but I couldn't find Northwoods for sale anywhere. They only seem to be stocking Prescotts at the moment which might be a bit too hot for a barebones system although the heatsink looked quite decent with that last one.

It's your call, that one is about 40 euro cheaper.

I could do that and keep my current processor but i like to keep up to date and €50 over my budget isnt that much. :)

My current processor being a p4 2.4 northwood.

I know this thread is old and i apologise for bringing it back up... but that barebones system which i was about to order today is not for sale on JES-Computers.de anymore so if anyone can find it anywhere else and would be so kind to post it up or similar amd64bit compatible barebones i would very much appreciate it.
