How do I copy a DVD onto my hard drive?

I want to copy a few DVDs onto my PC so I dont have to worry about swapping discs every so often. Have my PC hooked up to TV so want to use it as a sort of DVD jukebox.

    Cheers

If you want a direct copy, then DVD Decryptor is your man. Best proggy out there for this kinda job. Definately check out www.doom9.org, best DVD backup site out there. It has info on (literally) everything.

Auto Gordian Knot is an easy free way of backing up DVDs.

    Don't forget dvdshrink. www.dvdshrink.org.

Compresses the dvds so you can back them up onto another dvd.

Well you need to consider a few things. DVD movies range from about 4GB to 9GB. How big is your hard drive? Assuming 80GB HD, 50% free space - leaves you 40GB - could be as little as 4 dvds - not exactly a jukebox.

In that case consider converting to XVID - with Auto gordian knot. its a very handy program. You can dictate the size of each movie 1CD for about 90mins, 2 for anything over 110mins. The quality will remain excellent at a fraction of the space requiremnts.

if so then you should be able to plug it into the red/white/yellow connection on your tv or using a scart adapter plug it into the back.

yeah, you'll have to set your display mode to tv - right click on desktop - properties - setting - advanced - in there somewhere. also good to get a headphone jack to stereo coax lead. then get a scart adapter - plug all 3 wires into it - and it into yo tv.

Yep I have all those connectors and the manual.Just seemed like an awful lot of hassle having to plug in all those wires just to watch a movie.Could I not buy a TV out card thats easier to use?

But just in case I cant is there special drivers needed for the card to utilise all the features.Im using Omega drivers but think that I may have to change to ATI ones to use the card.Reason I want to use the TV out is because I usually out some of these movies on VCD and watch them that way,but if I could output direct to the TV then it would save all the VCD encoding etc.
    Thanks

As the guys above said, dvdDecrypter, it rules.
What I do, is rip a dvd as an ISO on to my hdd, using dvdDecrypter
and use deamonTools to set the iso as a virtual drive.
If you want you could shrink the iso to <5gb using dvdShrink (also mentioned above) which means on a 100gb drive you've got 20+ dvd's
and should you get a dvd burner in the future :-) you'll sit have the full dvd on you hdd.
I would not waste time on DivX/Xvid, they were great in their day but if file size isn't a problem then I'd avoid DivX/Xvid encoding.
If you want a quick guide on how I do it pm me.

you shouldn't have to plug them ALL in. the composite video out and audio should be all you need (the second two from the right). Do you have the red/white/yellow connectors on your tv or is it just a scart. either way it should be a piece o' piss. the all-in-wonders are designed for video input and output.

Cheers for all your help guys. As for the question about the size of my hard drive. I've got three 250GB hard drives, and it mainly a few episodes from tv programme DVDs that I'm looking to put on the PC, so it wouldnt even need to be the full DVD in all cases, so I should be able to fit a few on anyways. :-)

    Thanks again
