What's the point of putting somebody on your buddy list?

Does it then show you if they're online or not? Or does it highlight all their posts in some way? Or something else? Thanks!

It's handy for sending PMs. Like having that person in your email address book I guess. plus you can send a PM to multiple users if they're on your buddy list. Or at least that was the case with the last version of vBulletin we had here.
