It depends - some types of tickets are non-changable. Have you tried speaking to someone else there to see if they say the same?

Travel Agents are basically just brokers for the company you actually book with be it Airlines Tour Operators etc They have to follow the rules that each company has. Most tickets once issued cannot be changed if you went for the cheapest fare rather than a flexable one (higher price)

    Contact the airline directly.

Usually you can pay a penalty fee to get them changed...

afaik the only tickets that cannot be changed are ones got through a cancellation by another party. Even if its a budget ticket you should be able to change. There is a fee of course just to change and then an administration fee on top of that.
But if you have a package booked you might not be able to change due to the reservations with hostel/hotel

Don't know where you got that info from but it's not true ...if you book the cheapest ticket with some airlines once the ticket is issued the outbound cannot be changed .if you book online they can charge you 25-50 euro plus the difference of the new fare but not all airlines have this flexability. BTW hotel are normally the easiest part of a package to change

Do this. You can pretty much change any ticket. The only issue is price.

The only time I have had problems is with tour operators who work on fixed schedule.
