I have a 20gb hard drive with about 8gb in use, I was just wondering is there any way to completely back up everything on the hard drive (like an exact mirror of the hd) onto cd or dvd ? So that if I lose everything on the laptop, I have a 100% exact backup. I have access to a dvd burner - can anyone recommend any software/methods for doing this? thanks

A program likeNorton Ghost will give you a perfect image of the HDD. It will probably be able to compress it to 6gb but it should automatically split it so it will fit on to DVD-r

norton ghost is able to do it, you just install ghost, tell it what you want it to do and reboot the pc, it changes boot.ini to run a dos program in a virtual partition on the reboot

to make the process a lot faster its best to use partition magic to make a 5 gig partition for windows and you can stick all your easily replacable stuff like game installs in the other partition

    Thanks guys
In the end I used Norton Ghost to make an image of the hard drive, (it compressed 8gb into 4.2gb) so I could burn the image onto a single dvd. :)

do you have a DVD-rw disk, you can blank it and burn a fresh copy every week

And you can make the DVD your image is on bootable, if you start ghost from a boot disk.

Every PC my company puts out has a ghost image made with all the software loaded and configured, makes things a hell of a lot easier in the case of a hard disk failure.
