    Hey lads,

Thought ye might be able to help me, I have been dying to get broadband, but for some reason I cant. Now I checked my lines via Eircom's online service and Esat Bt's online service, both came up a fail. Now I have checked everyone's house I know in my area and they can all get it. Eircom inform me that I'd have to get a new line as I supposedly have some electric interference on my line, that will cost about 120 euro. Has anybody here heard of anything like this. Also I already have a 56.6kps modem and all I ever get is 44.0 kps and it suddenly disconnects sometimes and then when I go to reconnect and it wont. Can anybody tell me whats wrong.

    Hey Willem,
My mate has the exact same problem...interference on his line......his neighbours have broadband but he just cant....he then tried out the satalite option but his was not in the "line of sight". You would be extremely lucky to get 56kps on a dial up, id nearly say impossible, anywere over 30kps is a bonus. Disconnects happen for a variety of reasons, someone in the house may be lifting the phone receiver or u may have call waiting activated etc, etc,

You have three avenues to take...

    1. Is your phone line faulty, ie, do u hear static, get them to check it out and replace the line.

    2. have eircom check out the connection in the exchange....some times a loose connection can be the cause...it helps if u have a mate in eircom.

    3. you will just have to bite the bullet and pay the charge.

im sure there are people on the boards that can give u a better insight though.

    good luck

I'm in pretty much the same boat as regards Broadband on the phone line. Test done - can't get it - simple as that.

I'm just hoping that NTL's expansion of their broadband service gets to D9 soon.

Ironically I also get fairly fast speeds on my dial up (although NEVER 56 kbps)

I don't know where you are living Wideband with 30kps but I usually get 44 or 49kps on dial up.
You wont get much higher than that. Maybe 52 if you are lucky.
    44 would be standard though.

How fast do you get, when I had dial-up the most I ever got was 4 - 5KB/s

    you are talking about kilobytes
They are talking about kilobits which are much smaller, your dial up 4-5kbs would be the same as 40-50 of their kilobits
A dial up connection which is showing say for example 48,000 kbs( which arekilobits per second not kilobytes ) connection speed is actually only capabable of downloading maybe 3 or 4 kilobytes allowing for some upload aswell.
A 512 k broadband connection on the other hand will download at up to 55 kilobytes a second which is 20 times faster than dial up.
My iol broadband here for instance will download a megabyte in 20 seconds.

When I was on ntl dialup I used to get a 54.6 kbps connection about 90% of the time (sometimes 53.2 kbps) which would download at about 6 - 6.5 kBps.

I got the 750 kbps broadband connection from ntl a couple of weeks though & you get around 80-89kBps tops with it. :D

Am I being paranoid here or are Eircon up to something with the info on peoples lines. How come with one company I can get it,with another I can't.:confused:

They lock the database once you check , thats to make sure they get the sale and not another carrier. Check Eircom again andif they still say Pass contact Comreg.

If the Eircom checker says no it could be your line is waterlogged from the monsoon season and that it IS failing now, wait for a dry spell of 3 weeks or so .
