I live not too far from Amsterdam (Ex Ireland) and travel back and forth a lot, mainly from Schipol to Dublin

The easiest way is Aerlingus to Schipol Airport (A'dam) then it is a 15 minute train ride to Amsterdam Centraal Station.

The next easiest and cheaper option is to fly Basiqair.ie to Rotterdam, get the bus to Rotterdam Centraal station (20 mins, Eur2.40) and from there a train to Amsterdam Centraal (1 hour)

You could fly to Brussels and get the Thalys train to A'dam (2.5hrs), but I doubt the money saved, if any, would be worth the extra hassle.

As a last resort, you could fly with Ryainair from Stanstead to Eindhoven and then get the train (up to 3hours approx), but again the hassle factor/cost benifit is doubtful.

Let me know if there is anything else you want to know.

    Regards,

Accomodation in Amsterdam is expensive. I tried looking for a friend recently and most of the hostels/budget hotels in the centre had minimium occupancy of 2/3 nights.

For railway times, fares and booking try:

    http://www.b-rail.be/main/index.html (Belgian Railways)

You are talking up to Eur 80 depending on advance purchase./flexibility etc. Same applies to tickets bought from NS.nl

www.ns.nl (Dutch Railways). Gives times and prices too.

As for places to stay, the usual www.hotelworld.com, www.hostelworld.com seem to give the best range.

When in Amsterdam, try to take a few day trips out of the city, as there is more to the Netherlands than Amsterdam! Den Haag, Leiden, Maastricht make good days out.
