i plan on putting together a server to put in the attic, but U dont have the hardware yet.

I was going to setup the OS and play about on a virtual PC client. Then make a ghost image and reimage when I get the hardware.

The virtual pc is based on the good old intel BX chipset. How does linux react to this kind of harware change?

Ill probably use Red Hat, but to be honest I have no idea what im going to use.

As long as you don't move it to another architecture (i386 to SPARC for example) then the only real issue will be ensuring that there is kernel support for all the devices.

IDE to SCSI would be fine, as long as all the relevant support is compiled in your kernel. In that particular case, you would also have to change drive mappings from /dev/hdx to /dev/sdx as well.

If you're sticking with the same general architecture on both machines, you will need to make sure that support for the specific controllers on both machines is available.
