Your BIOS is defaulting to a lower FSB in order to prevent the CPU from being fried on first boot.

You may have the CPU external speed and multiplier set wrong. I had this same problem when I first got my XP2000+. You can change them in the BIOS. CPU external speed * multiplier should add up to the frequency of the processor (I think 2Ghz in the case of the XP2400).

Check the multiplier and the FSB speed in the BIOS that they are correct

My freind has similar issues to this he has got a Athlon XP 2800 clocking in at a little over 1gig and the fsb is set correct. And he has a Mobile XP 2800 clocked in at 1.4 the fsb is set wrong but he has no way of chaning it in the bios on his laptop.
