Jane Austen & the old Georgian houses

I've just finished Persuasion yet again and wondered -
might there be any Austen followers out there who would like to visit some of the grand old houses with me? I always have to visit alone, because if I even mention seeing old houses at home, my husband visibly cringes and the kids run and hide in the woods. (And sure I *enjoooyy* Tumble Jungle and the school football matches!)

I'd love to go see the houses with some sympathetic souls - especially if Persuasion is a favourite too. Never could stand Emma. And wouldn't mind talking a little about Jane & her works as well - on-board or off.
    thanks!

I'd love to, but are the places that Austen writes about even real? I know that Mansfield in Northants. was a fictional place, because Austen never visited the county herself - she relied on the accounts of her brother Henry.
Personally, Mansfield Park is my favourite, but then again I have only read that and Pride and Prejudice! :)

No, the houses in her books aren't real (although you can find some lively discussions on what houses *inspired* the houses in the books!).

I'm talking of the lovely old 18th/early 19th-century houses that survive here in Ireland, particularly the ones open to the public of course ;-) that let us visit the era, if not an actual place. Of course there's some mixed feelings on visiting them here, considering Penal Laws etc., but still, I love historic houses of any age, and the ones from that time always put me in mind of my favourite Austen books.

Mansfield Park is one of her novels that I really like - I like Fanny & Edmund & Sir Thomas, and the rest of them remind me too much of people in my own family not to laugh! Persuasion v. P&P is a close run with me, but I like the end of Persuasion better.

I visited N0. 29 FitzWilliam Street recently, and I loved it. Next time I go to Dublin, I'm going to Marino to see the Casino.
There's a book out called "Jane Austen:The World of her Novels". I was reading it in the shop, and it's really interesting. Especially the parts about how they used to write and send letters.
