North Dublin urban folk hero Damien Dempsey celebrates his recently-achieved platinum status for his excellent ‘Seize the Day’ album with a homecoming of sorts next month – three intimate shows at The Shieling Hotel in Raheny, just across the DART tracks from his native Donaghmede.

Since Damien capped a brilliant 2003 by stuffing Vicar St with his last headline Dublin show on New Year’s Eve; word of mouth of the brilliance and depth of his music has continued to spread with last year’s acclaimed second album ‘Seize the Day’ continuing to sell steadily in Ireland; his increasing profile and cult status helped by RTE’s broadcast in February of a "It's All Good – the Damien Dempsey story" - a documentary which gave those not fortunate enough to have witnessed the unique Damo live experience a thorough insight into the man and what drives his music.

The last 15 months have seen Damien Dempsey finally get the mass recognition and commercial success overdue to him in his native Ireland. More recognition was given at the 2004 Meteor Awards where Damien was the surprise success. Having been nominated in four categories, he walked away with two prizes - for Best Folk/Trad Act and Best Irish Country/Roots Artist. The release of the album in the UK in May was greeted with much critical acclaim – NME declared him "…a singer-songwriter who… can rip your heart in two…brilliant" while Music Week described him as "passionate, political and a terrific songwriter…". Awareness of the Damo Dempsey phenomenom internationally has been helped by the patronage of Morrissey who invited Damien to support him at his Manchester Evening News Arena gig in May and also more recently the Meltdown series of shows at London’s Royal Festival Hall which Morrissey curated. In fact Damo was the only act to appear at Meltdown twice.

Apart from his music; Damien Dempsey’s live shows are dominated by his warm stage presence – the spontaneous wit of his between-song banter is undoubtedly one of the things that make Christy Moore see Damo in his lineage. Damo’s most recent Irish shows were supporting Bob Dylan in Galway and Belfast in late June, so the three shows at The Sheiling will be a chance for fans to appreciate the man and his music in close and intimate surroundings.

Damien Dempsey plays The Sheiling Hotel in Raheny on Fri 13th Aug (9pm till 12:30am); Sat 14th Aug (3pm till 6pm) and again on the evening on Sat 14th Aug (9pm till 12:30am). Support is from Pauline Scanlon
