X-Client for Windows

I'm trying to get up and running an X-Windows server on my Mandrake 10 box, and remote login to it through an X-Client running on Windows. I did this some time ago using Red Hat 7.3 and a program called WinaXe. However, things seem to have moved on a bit, and I can't seem to get WinaXe up and running with my Mandrake box.

The default window manager on my Mandrake box is KDE, but I also have Gnome and a couple of others installed. Does anyone know how exactly I go about setting these up so they support some kind of graphical remote login?

Would VNC not do you? I think TightVNC is a standard package on Mandrake 10.

    Take a look at nomachine:

    http://www.nomachine.com/

Ive used it a few times using the linux, windows and zaurus clients and honestly have had no issues with it what so ever.

A friend of mine once showed me a Java X Server. He was able to get XEyes going on it. and there was screenshots of Elightenment working on it. Yep, enlightenment through Java. :D

TightVNC or any RFB will do

Cool, a way of making a linux WM as unresponsive and buggy as the windows shell :-)

That was called Weird X, and it has its uses.

Other options are MiX (no longer a free server, but you might be able to find the old one. The current one is $25)
    http://www.microimages.com/mix/

The best I used was called Xwin32.
This is more expensive, but at least with the old version I used, you could use it for sessions up to an hour long without a registration key.
It allows you choose between a single desktop window,
or have individual X applications managed by windows.
    http://www.xwin32.dk/index_uk.html

WinaXe should work though if you still have a license for it.
The thing to check for might be which display manager you're running.
If you're using KDM, you'll need to find
/usr/share/config/kdm/kdmrc and search for the section [Xdmcp] .
Change the Enable = false to Enable = true ,
and restart the display manager with service dm restart.
If you're using GDM, edit /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf
and change the similar line to True.

I'd just like to hijack this thread and say thanks to Niall. His posts are consistently of the highest quality, properly though through and totally lacking in the smart arsed comments I'm prone to.

    Cheers Niall

Hijack away there BenH - he's just hit the nail on the head there! Thanks a million Niall. I am of course using KDE, and need to change the config. I was wondering why I was getting no reply from the server!
