Speech Recognition

Hi. I am just wondering did anyone out there ever do a speech recognition project. Any advice would be appreciated.

Yeah I did one in 2nd year (now going into 4th elec eng). We had to write an essay on any technical topic - and then some of us had to do powerpoint presentations of our essays. That was fairly nerve wracking! i found it a very interesting thing to learn about though. I'll go through my things and see if I can find some stuff to help you out. :cool:

Thats very helpfull of you Blondie. I want to use speech signals to control a robot car but anything at all that would help would be really appreciated!

I think a lot of programming in C and perhaps in some other language required. Also maybe a lot of maths. Im starting a project soon in 4th Year electronics in it also, it is one part of it. I also have cameras, sensors, webcam, Internet control and some other stuff to do. It's a lot to do so thats why I'm looking for some advice now.

My project wasn't all that indepth, but yours does sound very interesting. I've got a few sites here to start you off with, I found some of them very handy for understanding how it actually worked.

http://www.gignews.com/fdlspeech1.htm this link gives a more indepth insight into how it works, and deals with using it in games ect. Might be more related to what your planning to do!

http://www.abilitynet.co.uk/content/alt_tech/voice/voice_recognition.htm a fairly detailed overveiw, shows some of the different products around. Not all that technical, but interesting

http://www.generation5.org/content/2001/markov.asp explains Markov models quite well

http://akpublic.research.att.com/info/Projects AT&T labs do some pretty good research into the whole field. This links to their project page, where they have a couple of voice recognition and voice synthesis projects going on


I know none of them really go into the coding all that much, but you might be able to get something useful out of them. I used a few other sites that were more indepth, but am having trouble finding the URL's. I'll post them up when I do - hope these help in the mean time!

Many thanks. I will look at them well but certainly look good from what i have seen.

Its a very interesting topic i think, its kinda cool. I am into analogue hardware design but now i want to look at other parts of electronics. Start back at college in 3 weeks so not long to go. Finished work this week and then will look at project. What project are you doing for final year?

I know that Matlab and C have been used in the past for speech recognition so I will probably have to use the same. It will be hard to have it working 100%(especially with my Donegal accent ) but I will give it a good try anyway. Electronics is brilliant, really glad I picked it and is a good hobby also if you have the time.
