Windows page file start up error.

At the start up of windows xp, I get an error saying there is no Windows Page file set go to blah blah settings in control panel and set an initial or maxium page file.

I put in 512 as initial and 766 as maximum, restarted system and got same error.

What should this page file thing be set 2?
Should I set it to System Managed setting?

    I have a 13gb hard drive atm, and 512ram.

I have no idea why this started appearing, I did try to do the doom3 mod to its config file, and now doom3 doesnt work, says it cant load default config, then the windows "doom3 has caused an error" box comes up.

Maybe changing this feck up the page file?

    Help needed,
    Thanks,
    -Coz.

Maybe your hard disk is failing? Just a thought. Check it with scandisk/chkdisk or whatever win xp uses for drive integrity checking.

I have run the chkdsk program twice now, and it does all the same fixing each time.

What should the page file settings be?

check the permissions on the system. you may have a conflict with those thats why it ain't allow you to creat it

afaik the pagin file should be set to 1 1/2 or 2 times the amount of physical ram but just let windows look after it

How do I check the permissions on XP?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,579 ✭✭✭Webmonkey

Well if it works in safemode then well at least you know that its not physical, perhaps its a virus maybe. Hit F8 key on startup to enter bootmenu, select safemode

Think I saw this problem appear before, spent well over hour on it, till it got to point that it was easier to just reghost [not easy problem to fix - if it's what I'm thinking of].

    whats reghost?

    reghost ...
having backed up image/default image for certain PC, and restoring that image.
[It was in work, so easier for me to ghost]

    Sounds confusing...

    Ghost, is a program.
It allows you to make an image [snapshot/direct copy of full drive], and then reproduce/burn that image onto as many drives/mediums as you wish ...

In my case, Instead of fixing the computer, I just used an older backup/image which we had.

In other words, for you, it may be easier plugging HD into another computer, get any data you need off it, and then format/reinstall.
If it is the same problem as I had, and from what you have said so far, sounds like it, it's a bastard to rectify, and I spent a fair bit of time on it ...

any idea what could have brought this on?

Sorry Arden, I run into 3-5 computer problems a day, on average, and usually it's down to users stupidity.
I honestly can't remember the cause, or my analysis of the suitation, I just remember that what you said rang a bell, and that I spent fair bit of time, with no major results, sorry could not be of more help.
