    Howeya

I want to convert a Divx movie so I can watch it on my DVD player. The player is VCD and SVCD so I presume this is the best option..

Any suggests for a specific application?

    Thanks

Have a look at http://www.videohelp.com/ and look at the guides section.

Remember, you'll be taking something that was compressed lossily (i.e. throwing away detail) and recompressing it using another lossy algorithm; the result will almost invariably look worse than what you started with; be prepared for that. Alternatively, I see a nice-looking Philips DVD player in the new Argos catalogue that supposedly plays DivX...

Yeah cheers I understand the pitfalls of converting from one lossy format to another. On the other hand, that Argus yoke sounds good.

i would buy a premodded xbox. it plays everything. if you do look at standalones, get one that plays xvid. nothing fully supports it but there are some that support xvid with everything used except gmc.
BTW, you can use dvd2svcd to convert between formats. google it.

i've just started doing this myself, and looked at loads of faqs and guides on doom9 and dvdrhelp but in the end i just downloaded the nerovisionexpress add on for Nero 6 and it's worked like a charm, just after watching a few episodes of a tv program that was captured from hi-d tv and havent had any problems.

Gotta say i like the modded xbox idea though but thats just cos i like messing about with stuff :D

the solderless ones are very easy to install. get the executer lite plus.

Well, you do also need software, like XBox Media Player (or it's successor, XBox Media Center - http://www.xboxmediacenter.de/ ) - but this is (shall we say) "interesting" to obtain as you can only legally download the source code, and compiling it is a rather complex operation and requires that you have specific Microsoft compilers and development kits and such, which (at least some of) aren't free. So it's not as straightforward as you might think.

There's also the fact that (at least the last time I read any installation instructions) it's also quite tricky to do - but then again I've never done it so I can hardly be considered a canonical source of information. All I can say is that I have tinkered with the notion myself, and it looks quite complex...

get nero, convert your divx ro mpeg1 or something and just go to make Video CD on nero and add the file. Bad thing = 1 divx = double the size on mpeg = 2 cds.

i havent done it for anymovies, cause it takes ages to convert and you need to split your file into 2 since its over 1gb, that takes ages too.

to convert divx to mpeg = u need tmpneg or something (google)
sometimes u need to rip sound first and then join it back in, ugh.

the software side is very simple, it is installing the chip that is hard, but if you get the solderless one, it is quite simple. you can also softmod it, but i would not recommend it.

Chances are your film is over 80mins?

The best way i found is to use "easy video splitter" and Nero. The easy video splitter allows you to cut the Divx in two. Then just use Nero to make a VCD and select the Divx........ it will do the encoding etc . The only prob is you have 2 cd's per film but quality is very good (especially when its on TV - lower resolution)........

nero encodes divx ? are you sure ? is this nero 6 ? and where do u click divx ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 698 ✭✭✭vishal

no nero encodes mpeg 1 (free) = vcd or
mpeg 2 (not free) = svcd

anybody try a kvcd, they look great?

Try using DVD2AVI. It has an option to covert AVI to DVD. Get it from Doom9.org. You will also need Cinema Craft Encoder or TMPG. I have used it with good results and it is easy to use.

Nero has encoded my Divx's with no problems at all. I just click make video CD and then select the Divx files........ no problems. I dont think i downloaded anything special.

Was using Nero5 , now using Nero 6. Ive probably done 10-15 so its not a once off or anything.

    Ah I couldnt be arsed..

Just bought a long S-Video cable and its doing a lovely job..

Just one thing, I hav a fairly decent 28 inch Philips widescreen TV. It was able display 1024x768 as the resolution. This surprised me a bit, I expected it to be alot lower.. Anyone know if this is higher than normal?

As far as I remember, the effective resolution of a PAL TV is about 720x576. It's not actually correct, as the TV picture is in fact made up of 625 lines of analogue data (i.e. more vertical lines, and a hairy enough distinction between horizontally-adjacent "pixels"), but it works out at more-or-less that resolution (which is what's used for DVDs and whatnot). Your card's TV-out is resizing your desktop dynamically to be displayable on the TV.

My old TV was limited to 800x600, but my new TV allows at least up to 1024x768. I'm not sure if thats because i'm using my new ATI 9600pro, or if its just because the TV is better. Maybe someone could clarify that. But yes, i can set high resolutions too.
