anyone reccomend a cheap and cheerful guitar / or amp repair person in dublin? the work isnt that major (maybe some fret replacements would be the most serious thing on the guitar and the amp is a ****ty valvestate that probably just needs a tune-up)??

also, i am sick of moaning to myself about the price of strings, anyone ever have any positive dealings with cheap internet string retailers?? i am thinking of maybe even bulk buying a ****load.

On the guitar side of things, I'd recommend Derek Nelson. He's a luthier who works out of Marlay Park Craft Centre. He did some fret work on my Lowden, and did a fantastic job. It may cost more than you want to pay, but if you've a nice guitar, it's worth it.

As for the amp, well, it's a valvestate..."a tune-up" is unlikely to help it sound any good regardless, if it's broken, or just not sounding great, you may be as well just replacing it.

Generally the place where you bought the guitar will do you a nice deal on repairs. I got my Ibanez in Musician and they've never charged me for any of the little problems they've fixed with it.

nice one guys, you really are the most helpful bunch of people i've ever come across on the interweb.

found a perfectly good ex-demo marshall mode four cab in musicmaker today for half price, i'm so happy i just had to mention it..

Try Instrumental on Batchelors Walk. I needed some soldering work on my bass and they did it for €5. But one thing, when you hand it in and they say 'call back same time tomorrow', phone them and make sure they actually have it done, cos they were a bit forgetful with me!

I'd recommend Derrick Nelson too. He's done work for me on my 82' Ovation and the work was a amazing. He's currently refretting my Gibson Les Paul Custom. It's going to cost me alot more. But will be worth it in the long run. He does a fantastic job. His number is 01-494-2741

As for the valvestate. If its ****ed don't bother trying to fix it. Amps like that can be a bollox to fix if there's something wrong. But if its something minor you can sort it out fairly handy.

How much does refretting or pickup switch replacement usually cost?

The refret can vary depending on the guitar and how much work is involved. but you'd be looking at around 300+ but it all depends.

The refret on my LP Custom is going to cost me around 500 yoyo's cuz theres binding on the neck that also goes up where the frets are so theres more work involved to maintain the binding and not damage it.

Switch replacement can be done yourself if you know how to do wiring. Shops will charge ya 30-40 yoyo's I'm sure. For a job that takes about 2mins...
