I've just installed a external hard drive via my usb port. According to device manager in windows I have USB 2.0 (there is an usb 2.0 enhanced controller present) but i'm only getting usb 1.0 transfer speeds. the hard drive is also usb 2.0 enabled. i'm confused!? any ideas? thanks

Check the manufacturers documentation to make sure that Windows is properly set up to use the device as a USB 2 device, otherwise it'll assume USB 1.1.

If you're using Windows XP, make sure you've got at least service pack 1 installed.

There's nothing in the manufactures documentation and i've service pack 1 installed. i'm at a loss.

    Is it powered?

Some external USB 2.0 kit need two USB cables one for power and the otehr for transfer, not sure if thats related but might be worth a check.

did ya check the settings in the bios. the bios can set the USB to 1.1 or 2.0 and sometimes both so you can use both types of devices.
I had to turn mine onto 2.0 in the bios to get it to work

I had problems with a socket A motherboard, (Epox) in the past. No matter what I did I couldn't get usb2 working on it. Replaced the board with another make and had no problems from then on.

i've downloaded an update from the dell website (i've a dell laptop) and thats improved the speed up to about 20mb/s, still nowhere near the 400mb/s i should be getting.

Can we be very clear about this please, it's 20Mbps not 20MBps right? There is a huge diff between the two :D!
