Alternative to Dell?

I have been charged with selecting a PC for a friend.

€1200, 17 inch TFT, games, web design etc)

Building it myself for them is not an option as his parents would prefer to buy prebuilt from a known retailer (I know, I know  )

    Problem is where to buy...

Dell are a rip off, period (+€400 for 17 inch flat panel upgrade, no firewire as standard, crap gfx card etc).

Jes computer is not so bad but have a limited range and no customisation (not essential if the PC is right).

    Any suggestions?

Thank you for visiting The Computer City web site. We are a trade PC builder located in Dublin, Ireland. This web site is now updated every day. As we are a trade supplier we only supply to computer companies who are selling onwards and have their own in-house technical support

you're gonna find it hard to get a prebuilt machine with a 17inch tft with low response times enough for games and to top it off the budget doesn't help

thing is from my experience the places that build them for you ie. jes.de arent really ''known retailers'' all the package computer companies have simliar prices but have you tried TINY?

i saw an ad of theirs in the paper a while ago and it was a good package computer SATA, a good gfx one of those pentiums with a 1mb cache and screen etc. i believe it fell in with that 1200 price limit too

cant hurt to look dunno know the site though

yeah - i've been looking all morning, including that thread.

I know the budget is a bit tight.

TBH - I have a 17inch samsng 24ms and it's fine for games and movies.

Checking out Tiny as we, eh, speak..

Stay away from Tiny. I have NEVER heard a remotly good story about their pc's. They use the cheapest parts they can get and give no after market sales!

Impress upon them how much of a waste of money it is to buy from the big retailers like Dell/PC World etc and tell them the only real alternative is to custom build. If not, you can't help them. It's funny, someone comes to you for advice on computers because you know a lot about that sort of stuff but then won't take you advice because they prefer to buy from a known ripoff merchant
You could look at www.marx-computers.com They'll do custom build on decent games PCs at good prices. Is TFT a requirement or do they just want to keep up with the Jonses? I'd say buy a 19" or 21" CRT would be a better spend of money.

stay away from jaguar, they are handy if you live beside them but are expensive and dont give any specifics on their parts

    Here's a great system for 1100.

    http://www.jes-computer.de/product_info.php?pID=17364

The OS will be in german though and the keyboard will have a german layout but it's easy to get used to. The keyboard that is. They have another one with 2 x 200gb hd's for 1200.

You would still have to get a monitor though but that system is top notch.

How about Alienware? Some of the UK makers like Eversham Vale, Mesh will deliver to Ireland. Generally they have better spec than a Dell, HP or Siemens. If you want the least amount of hassle, adn its not your money, just order the Dell.

    Where's my post gone?

    Yeah, I'm meeting him today.
Basically I'll tell him the truth.

    You can't get a decent system with a 17inch TFT for 1200.
    (unless you build it youself)

A 15inch TFT or a 17/19 ich CRT will have to do.

    Thanks Lads.

What about the ccity one? A 3Ghz HT P4 with a 17" tft for a grand?

Buy an issue of Computer Buyer or PC Pro and look at the different suppliers.
There are some great deals to be found in the Labs sections as the manufacturers often supply below cost machines to attract business.
    Have a look at
Mesh (Delivery to Ireland is very high though)
    www.nethighstreet.com
    or www.savastore.com

I've had a few people asking me advice about getting a new PC and when I suggest building it for them they say they want if from the likes of Dell etc. Why bother asking then

Lol when will parents learn. For that I would buy them a Dell but I would stick a Linux Distrabution on it instead of windows :)

Let them buy a Dell and stick the tech support number in big numbers on the computer somewhere. Save you 2 years of stupid questions.
