    Hey guys

Im thinking of picking up a GeForce 6800 Ultra based card and was wondering on the best make to go for?

Just the normal cards tho, none of those €900+ water cooled jobbies lol.

Any of the manufacturers are fine. They will all perform the same. Just find the one with the prices and software you like and go with that.

The 6800 GT is cheaper and can be over clocked to 6800 Ultra speeds.

Not sure if the OCed version works the same but I assume it should. Once it's cooled properly. I'll be going for the GT personally.

I'd get an X800XT over a 6800u. It performs better in almost every benchmark except open gl ones. I saw new benchmarks comparing far cry with sm3 in use and the x800xt still beat the 6800u. It even beat an overclocked water cooled version of it.

The 6800gt is definitely better than the X800pro but the X800xt is better than 6800u.

    Here is the link.

Another vote for the 6800GT (I'm getting one). It can overclock (usually) to Ultra speeds anyway, and it's a fair bit cheaper.

Id go with the GT version and overclock it. Even at stock speeds there doesnt seem to be that large a difference in performance.

    Im going with nVidia as:

    a) Better performance with Doom3 engines. Large amount of other games will use the engine too no doubt.
    b) Better priced hardware, the GT has all the features of the Ultra, at a price point close to or under the X800 Pro.
    c) Better support for various other game/engines Im looking forward to, ie Stalker and WH40K. Clear connection between nV and Game Devs..
    d) New design, Im a sucker for new things, the X800 is just another rehash of the (excellent) R300 core. I had/have 9700 and 9800s already, it gets boring.

I was wondering, whats the cheapest 6800 or XT u guys have seen out there? I dont know if I will get either yet as Ive just fitted VGA cooler and overclocked my 9800 Pro. But I would like to know anyway. Will the price drop dramatically any time soon? Cheapest Ive seen was on Komplett.

Komplett can put down any price they want, but you wont get one off them as they have zero stock!

Hmmz be careful if buying a 6800ultra and have an overclocked machine.

A 6800ultra draws approx 70+ watts of power when idle, its about 130 when under load. A 480w psu can probably power that and you cpu etc but it depends on how much power the rest of the system draws.

Anandtech couldnt run doom3 with a 6800ultra with an overclocked system from a 480w psu. You have been warned.

EDIT: It draws it from the 12v rail mostly (5v is the same as a 9800xt) so be sure your 12v can handle it. You be fine witha 480w true blue tho i'd say...

The Galaxy Glacier versions come with the Artic VGA Cooler Rev4 fitted. Meant to overclock quite nicely :)

Can I just advise everyone against getting anything from overclockers.co.uk ?

They list 6800 GT cards as in stock on their site, but they're actually out. They don't have a phone number (that people actually answer - just an answering machine telling you to e-mail instead!) and don't answer e-mails. Very poor service.

I got my AOpen 6800 Ultra from overclockers about 3 weeks ago now, most of the brands will give the same results except for the XFX which comes pre-overclocked - you pay an extra E15 or somthing for that.Another thing, the card has no problems running off the one power line from the psu...theres a lot of nonsense about the cards power requirements, You see my system specs in my sig, it works no probs with a 450W beQuiet psu,Your 480W antec will be grand.
