    Hi there fellow techies,

I want to buy an mp3 player but I heard that they all come with there own software, so you can only import and export from one PC.

is this true? if not which ones should I avoid as I made a mistake of buying a ATRAC Mini disk recorder thinking it would pop-up as an extra drive and I could just copy and paste mp3s onto it.. sounds great dosent it. even has MP3/USB on the box! I'm sure thousands have fallen for this trick.

Yes and no. In short, come mp3 players, like the iPod, coem with their own software that you have to use to legitimatly buy music, in said case, iTunes. Some mp3 players act as USB mass storage devices, allowing you to drag and drop music using your usual interface, whereas other do come with software that you need to use to transfer the files across, but this type rarely uses copy protection on the files.

    iRiver IHP series.

No software, hook it up. drag, drop, disconnect, enjoy.

This is also the best mp3 player out there so don't worry about it's other features. They are far ahead of the posse.

I'm after geting a Philips HDD120 20 GB. It willtake mp3s that you just loaded from someone else's pc, but it won't play the, In this way, it's acting only as an external drive. to play them, you need the Philips software. Which is absolutely terrible. Stay away. But you can transfer from other pcs than your own, if you have the software with you. It's a pain, I know, but it's the only way to actually play the mp3s you take without going home first.
