Cheap stuff in Northern Ireland?

As I will be travelling to Belfast and back around 8-10 times in the next 8 months or so to get some dental work done (yes cheaper than here surprise surprise!) and I will be spending quite a fair bit on petrol, I was hoping that I could offset some of this expense by taking advantage of the supposedly lower prices of things up there. I'm not sure what's cheaper and what's not so if anyone could recommend any places to check out that would be sweet. Shopping districts, centres, particular shops (in city centre Belfast or near) etc... In particular I'm interested in electronic goods and clothes but it doesn't really matter as I've really no idea what I could end up needing (haha wanting!) over the next 8 months! :D

Eh village? What village is this? There are many villages in Northern Ireland.
I don't think the guy is a retard, he's hardly going to park an Irish reg car in an area with red white and blue kerbstones and ulster flags all around.

Giles - alcohol and groceries are generally cheaper, I like Sainsburys the best. Clothes can be cheaper...I noticed they're usually quite a bit cheaper in A-Wear in the north than in the republic!
Where are you going to the dentist? I'd recommend Ballybot clinic in Newry, they're brill.

Electronics (of a home entertainment nature) are bloody cheap in Rich Sounds in Belfast - look here for an incomplete list of their wares.

A few comments, first up, I disagree with using the term "retard" on a public msgboard, and secondly unfortunately, in many places in Belfast you may have to park your car in an area with painted kerbstones and flags, no matter what colour. Thirdly, while there are many villages in ireland, but he is referring to the village area off the sandy row, nothing else.
    Happy shopping

interested in where you're going, what you're getting done & how much you're paying. PM me if you don't want to post public, I need to get some serious stuff done myself, but the thoughts of putting the price of a small car in my mouth is offputting

The place I'm getting my dental (ortho) work done is called Cavelhill Dental Centre. It's about 3 miles North of the city centre I think. Nice people there as well I was nearly 2 hours late the first time and they were grand with it!

Stick to the main shopping areas of Belfast and you'll be fine - there's plently of Irish-reg cars about here. There's nothing of interest in Sandy Row anyways, and trust me, you'll soon know when you're not welcome in an area in Belfast. It is very close to the city center though. Best advice I can give is - just keep driving. But damn agent smith for bring that off-topic sh!te into this thread.

About shopping - it's all relative - as same as any city - from getting £200 stuff for £20/£30 cheaper to buying £8 Gunniess cans for £5 in certain shops - all depends on the time and place. Most people from here go over the border to the South to get petrol, so I'm sure here's the same kind thing for the other way round. In general though, you're better buying in Euro than GB Sterling. Have a look at some of the online stores e.g. "Penny's" is "Primark" up here - that might give you a better idea of the prices. Then again, you may be best going for the independant shops, rather than the global ones.

What are you having done & how much is it costing ? I need to get some crowns replaced & maybe a bridge or implant.

I'm getting 2 amalgam fillings replaced, a root canal and a bridge over 3 teeth (to replace a tooth my orthodontist removed for no reason...that's a long story...and because one of the teeth it's going to be beside is slightly twisted they have to do a root canal and pare it down, so i'll have one false tooth and one capped) comes to £940. That's including x-rays etc.

I think to have that done here you'd be looking at the guts of three grand.

    £940 Sterling = approx €1400

That's still a really great price, must look at getting mine done

I was quoted in the region of €8,000 for the work on mine. (long story)

I find dentists in the UK/up North are much better than in Ireland. They're less like vultures when it comes to making money and seem better trained? I'd never go back to a dentist in the south again unless it was an emergency

I've heard people mention Junction One to me. It's supposed to be good alright. I do some grocery shopping in a place called Better Deals in Strabane. Pound = Euro in that shop. Not everything seems cheaper but a lot of it is, especially toiletries etc.

I'm not arsed going into the specifics again as but have a look at this thread I started a while back. :)

Giles - Looking for bargains in the North? With 10 months experience so far, I can safely say 2 things to you - nappies & baby food - considerably cheaper. But don't get them unless you need them !!

Probably stating the obvious, but fill up car in south and the nearer the border the dearer it seems to get.

I personally would not recommend junction one. I was in it a couple of weeks ago. No bargains there. Stock is very limited in the shops and very small selction of sizes and prices are not reasonable. Other people I know that have went to it think the same aswell.

I heard a while back that gamecubes were going for something like £40 in index. They'd be €149 down here, if your interested in that anyway?

aren't things cheaper in NI because they get PAID less?

Among other factors of course, like being part of an ...ahem... empire?
