laptop overheating problem

    Hey,

Having problems with my laptop, would be really grateful if anyone has any advice. It's a dell inspiron 5100, just over a year old. Serious overheating problem, in that it gets horribly, horribly hot, even when on a flat surface where the fan isn't in any way obstructed. It is actually too hot to hold on your lap (though I guess the fan is more easily obstructed that way). Anyway, so it keeps turning itself off. It doesn't matter how long I leave it off for, it just overheats again. Like sometimes it's grand and will last ages and sometimes it's absolutely crap.

Found an old thread about it on the dell US forum, it seems to be a common problem with this laptop, someone suggested cleaning the fan and then blasting the fan with compressed air about once a week. I've no clue where to even get compressed air but how hard would it be to clean the fan.. haven't taken it apart before and don't like the sound of it but how risky is it?

Yep laptops do tend to get quite hot. In fact i think someone got burnt from his  .

    You might consider getting this:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000BVYTV/qid%3D1092089128/202-5207244-2068602

I've used it and it works quite well. You'll notice it mostly in the long run. Moves your laptop from hot to warm; but effectiveness varies depending on how well you position it in relation to your vents and components like the CPU etc...

USB powered; which id definetly nice

I've a latitude that does the same. It gets very hot underneath.

I've opened the latitude to clean the fans because of noise more than heat problems; not a particularly fun job.

The fans are running smoothly but the machine is still getting very very hot. I think that this could be 'normal'.

Try a good vacumn cleaner rather than open the machine.
