Gay Byrne was 70 this week as im sure you all know! Having watched some clips from the Late Late again ,i think RTE should be showing old Late Late's
Late? when Pat Kenny is asleep!
RTE have a great archive in The Late Late. It would be great to be able to watch some of those old shows. Anyone agree?

This should be Televsion but until then...Yes some repeats would be good if
only as a reminder of what a catholic/conservative hell-hole this country once was, full of ppl in big coats with small minds. That and we could see The Boomtown Rats fantastic debut in 1977 which I still remember. You'd swear Aliens had just invaded the studio from Planet Rough 'n Ready. Laughing at the fashions could be good too.

    Mike.

Yes, there is plenty of material there. They did a series of classic Parkinson interviews on the BBC a while back so don't see why RTE shouldn't do the same with the longest running chat show in the world.

Now I shall tune out as the usual gombeens come on tearing the arse out of RTE.

It would be good to see a retrospective I think. The Late Late was never my favourite show, but I'm sure there is a lot of good stuff on tape.

wow I definitely want to kick Bishop Brennan up the arse now

Thats what i mean! It would be like looking at ourselves our "celtic tiger"?
I know its never going to happen but what do people remember about the old Late Late? The disscussions in the studio should be shown to every leaving cert student in my opinion!

According to this weeks Sunday Times, the majority of Late Late Show archive footage has been wiped and is therefore lost forever. The article also said that this isn't the first time something like this has happened in RTE.

I cringe watching Pat Kenny presenting TLLS, it's like he doesn't realize the people who he talks to are actually human. One of the worst interviewers I've seen in my life, he doesn't appear to listen to their answers, just rolls off questions and gives fake laughs.

At least Gay Byrne seemed to be genuine most of the time.

He is good on the radio and for the more serious, journalistic-type interviews as opposed to the showbiz, celebrity type interviewer.

On Reeling Back The Years last week, for 1983 they showed a clip from the Late Late where they had all the Skas, punks etc. with their crazy looks and hairstyles. It would be interesting to see what those guys all look like today, if they could find them.

Remember when Boyzone "appeared" for the first time? It was the most toe-curling tv ever, anywhere. The like will not be seen again.

    Mike.

    But unfortunately, they were! :)

a few repeats of past musical guests or some decent interviews, yes

repeating a whole fecking show, hell no

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,001 ✭✭✭✭Flukey

Some of the specials they did over the years are worth repeating in full. They did a few for some well known Irish personalities and musicians like the Dubliners. They were good shows.

Sure why would he? He's not human himself.

Gay Byrne is about the only good thing to come from RTE. No other "personality" in this country comes close.

I saw Gaybo walking around DCU with an entourage last April. Thought he might have been scoping out the Helix as a possible location for a new show. Maybe he's just going back to college! :)

I don't think anyone who has ever seen it will forget it..it burns itself on to your mind!

I wouldn't mind seeing some of the good ones again. Like the fantastic "debates" between the Scientologists and the families of people they had brainwashed.

Or the one which had the victims of the Omagh bombing talking about their experiences. Rolf Harris was also on the show and he burst into tears as they were talking. There was complete silence.

    And the toy-show ones, obviously.

The Toy Shows minus the Billy Barry Kids and you've got a deal!

For a TV show to contain seminal moments in the culture of a country is an amazing achievement. (american equivalent - the moon landing). Religion, sexuality, politics evertything inculded. As interviewers go I don't think anyone can match Gay Byrne. Pat Kenny, while he can be good on radio - comes across as smarmy and cheesy on tv. Then again even Dunphy ended up somewhat smarmy (where were the tough questions?????).
More and more we're heading the way of the american chat-shows (leno/letterman) minus the humour. All we're left with is a wandering through of pseudo-celebrities pawning their newest movie/book/cd.

    For shame!

The only problem with Gay Byrne is that he is his own greatest fan.

    Gaybo rocks, top bloke.
    Anyone remember the show where they rang some woman up to tell her she had won a car, and gaybo was making a laugh of her 'cos she didn't sound too excited and the woman goes;
    "my mother died last night"
The look on his face was priceless.

I think it was the woman's daughter who had died and they had just buried her that day. The daughter actually posted the mother's winning postcard to the Late Late Show.

I'm not a big fan of Gay's but the way he handled that situation was amazing, he spoke to the woman sincerly, asked her a few questions about her daughter etc. and genuinely was extremely decent. Couldn't imagine Pat Kenny being that graceful in a similar situation...

I remember it too..and he did handle it well, all things considerd. Pat "The Real Alan Partridge" Kenny would have really messed it up.

I'd love to see the famous "100 grand a year - how can you run three homes?" P. Flynn interview! Gaybo was fantastic - he kept feeding him more and more rope...That and the Terry Keane when the audience booed her defense of Charlie Haughey. I don't think the audience pays attention to P. Kenny - they just want to see themselves on telly...

Then there was the time he had Gerry Adams on it, but did not go and sit beside him. Gerry had to invite him to do so. Gay and RTE slipped up that night a it and gave Sinn Féin a bit of a publicity coup.

The Late Late was fine as it some times reflected the Ireland of its day.

    Ireland has moved on.

Maybe RTE could start making decent programmes for today and not relying on Gaybo achieves.

Am I right in thinking that this girl had actually died in a car accident, which made the awarding of the car even more awkward for GB?

Other Late Late moments I'd love to see include the '60s incident where when a woman was asked what she wore on her honeymoon, she replied "nothing" causing a national storm. ("There was no sex in Ireland before television," lambasted Oliver Flanagan, TD, a week later.)

Also, some guy in the 60s or 70s (can't remember what it was over) called a bishop a moron and provoked another national scandal!

I suppose the true sign that this show was of great importance was it cut down (solely Irish interest elements removed) version on Channel 4 on the following Monday. (Admittedly, though, this was not carried in the final few years of GB's reign.)

In the 1960's it was a really imporant show in Irish life. It came in a decade in which great changes were happening in the world. It helped to get a lot of issues discussed in front of a wide audience. In today's world it would be hard to understand how much influence the Late LAte Show and Gay Byrne had on Irish Life. Any social history of Ireland during this time, would almost certainly make mention of it.

Does the PK version do any of the yearly things Gaybo's did like sending those people to an island, the rubbish business idea's show and the renovate useless junk show? (Another "chair" scandal would be welcome)...

Out on a limb since post is so old, but would anyone know where you could find old late late show clips?? From 70's / 80's.
