USB/Broadband/Win98 Question

I have broadband ( with eircom, yeah I know I know, Netopia Combi modem ), which can be used over either USB or Ethernet.

My main PC, which runs WinXP, is running off the Ethernet connection, like a dream.

Now I have an old Win98 PC, on which I set up a BB connection via the USB port( no LAN card on this machine ) and it worked but with some issues.

I installed the USB Drivers from the CDROM that came with the modem, no prob. The connection worked, but I have a question...is there an issue with a USB Connection and distance. For example, could I get a 50ft USB Cable made up and have the BB run as normal? I wouldn't mind some slight diminishment in performance however.

Another issue with Win98. After I installed the USB Drivers and restarted, I was asked to log in as a Network Admin or something. I never set up a password for this, so I just clicked "OK" and I was allowed on, however, all of the desktop items became unclickable. I was not allowed access to anything, to run Internet Explorer I had to go "start --> run --> iexplore"...I normally run Firefox, but I haven't put on the Win98 PC yet.

ANy answer to the questions greatly appreciated.
