How to recover data from laptop hard drive?

I salvaged the 2.5" hard drive from my dying laptop (HP Pavillion running Win XP Home), but I've no idea what I need to recover the data (including some fairly confidential materials) from this.

Note that I'm a software guy, definitely not a hardware guy. Picking up a screwdriver is alien to me, so please give any hardware related instructions in words of one syllable.

Is there anywhere in Dublin that would offer this kind of recovery service (preferably by plugging in my drive and letting me do the actual copying myself)?

I'll also need to ensure the data is securely wiped after recovery.

You can hook up your laptop hard drive to a desktop computer using a cable something like this . As far as I remember there should be a jumper on the back of the laptop drive that needs to be changed to set it as a slave unit. Then plug it in and boot up your PC. It will appear as a separate drive/drives in My Computer.

Assuming there was no problem with the drive, you could just put it into another laptop you had and then burn off any relevant files to cd or copy to a network drive. Failing that then a usb hard drive enclosure's are a life saver. I'd offer a loan but i'm in clare. Maybe a friendly dub will let you borrow theirs. I bought mine on ebay

    Thanks for all the suggestions.

MarkR - That USB thingy sounds like just what I need. Will save the need/risk for me to open up the host machine to read my old drive. I see Peats have one and Komplett have a a few different ones.

    Thanks all.

Thanks for all your help, particularly to MarkR for his suggestion of the USB caddy. I got one from Komplett, and after a bit of messing round with security settings (had to 'take ownership' of some protected folders), I got the relevant data off the drive.

Now to see if I can wipe the sensitive data securely.
