It was confirmed today on NewsTalk106 by Patsy McGonagle of the AAI that an Irish male athlete has tested positive for a banned substance.

The AAI have issued a statement (I haven't been able to locate it as yet).

The athlete's name has not yet been released. According to McGonagle it is highly unlikely that the athlete will compete in the Athens Olympics.

As usual BBC sport has more information on this than our own national broadcaster

Here's a link to the story.

It's a pity though because Irish people are often very naieve about such things, our athletes are just as likely to be using performance enhancing drugs as any other countries'.

The GAA for years attempted to prevent their players from being tested but all of that has changed now.

However, heaven forbid we win a track & field medal in Athens, the cynics amongst us will no doubt throw doubts on the performance.

The athlete has been named on RTÉ Sport and NewsTalk 106 as 28 year old Cork athlete Cathal Lombard.

He was due to compete in the 10,000metres in Athens.

It is alleged that he took the banned substance erythropoietin (EPO).

I didn't realise that they had gotten a reliable test for EPO in athletes. Anyone got further information on that?

    EDIT:
Until the middle of last year, the IAAF required both blood and urine samples to be taken
for the purposes of testing for rh-EPO. However, following publication of a report by
the World Anti-Doping Agency (“WADA”) in June 2003 confirming that the urine rh-
EPO test stands alone as a scientific method for the detection of rh-EPO, the IAAF now
recognises adverse analytical findings for rh-EPO detected directly in an athlete’s urine.
The IAAF still continues however to take blood samples, where appropriate, as an aid to
the detection of rh-EPO administration or as providing (where relevant and appropriate)
corroborative evidence of its presence in a urine sample.
