DVD Storage Capacity?

I was making a backup of one of my DVDs, only to find that I couldn't because of insufficient storage capacity. PC World advise me that a single sided DVD has a 4.7Gb capacity, yet my original DVD has files totalling 6.7Gb. Can anybody explain how this is possible on a single sided DVD?

Dual layers. A single layer has 4.7GB while dual layers combined have 8.5GB.

They are dual layered dvds so in effect they are 2 4.36gb (the actual capacity of 4.7gb dvds) dvds pressed together u will need to compress the dvd using dvd shrink and the www.doom9.org guides to make your dvd fit onto a 4.7gb one.
