Finally, this is out on DVD!

    I really recommend it!

Saw this a few months back, apprehensive of the bad press it was getting.

What is turned out to be, in my opinion, was the most under-rated film of the year!

It's been wrongly marketed as a sex comedy, like American Pie. There is a couple of dick and fart jokes in there, but overall it reminded me a little of the 80's comedies (elements of 'Risky Business' / 'One Crazy Summer' in there)

The film is very witty in parts and very sweet in others. It has an underlying romance which is not sickly and hard to believe.

Also has an amazing soundtrack with David Gray, Elliott Smith, Queen etc.

I really recommend it! Probably not for everyone - but your girlfriend will enjoy the romantic side of it while you enjoy the humour / Elisha Cuthbert as eye candy! :p

Apologies!... this turned out more like a review than a recommendation!

i got it in xtravision last night and was impressed, better than the usual rubbish. Man elisha is a horny babe. I know she was hot from 24 but she looks unreal during the whole movie, That time where she said "Do u wana fcuk me", i nearly wet myself.

i think i will rip that 3 seconds of "Do u wana fcuk me" and use it as my logon sound in windows. Oh the joy of turning on a computer......

Glad to see other people besides myself enjoyed it!..

elvis2002, if you're using Elisha's dirty talk for your Windows logon sound, just make sure a nephew / little brother doesn't switch it on ahead of you.

He'll be repeating it for days! :D

PS - Made a copy of it and watched it again just there. Definantly has some amazing music in it..

    - Queen & David Bowie "Under Pressure"
    - Elliott Smith "Angeles"
    - Echo & The Bunnymen "The Killing Moon"
    - David Gray "This Year's Love"
    - N.E.R.D. "Lap Dance"
    - The Verve "Lucky Man"
    - The Who "Baba O'Reilly (Teenage Wasteland)"

Oh, and did anyone else think Chris Marquette who plays Eli looks like a mini John Cusack?

He would have stole the film if it wasn't for Timothy Olyphant as Kelly, Danielle's movie producer.

But every film i've seen him in, he's steals every scene! (especially great in 'Go')

Just watched it myself (the unrated version). I felt it started great. The 2 leads were good together on screen and Elisha Cuthbert looked hot as hell. However, the film then went from what was building up to be a good romantic comedy to something else. There were a fe too many twists at the end and for the 2nd half the story wasn't about the 2 leads anymore.

P.S. If you like Timothy Olyphant, make you sure you catch him in Deadwood. I think Sky One are showing it in September.

Yeah, a lot of people felt it had too many twists in the ending.

The first half of the film was establishing their romance. And the second half of the film was more about how far would he go and how much would he be willing to sacrifice to be with her. That's the message i got from it anyways.

Don't know why it got such negative reviews in the press though. It's a helluva lot better than a lot of those so-called "teen comedies" coming out of Hollywood ("Eurotrip" and "Harold And Kumar").

After looking up the synopsis for Deadwood, i'm not too sure about it.... a western type drama. Also stars Ian 'Lovejoy' McShane! :D

Still waiting for 'Dead Like Me' to return to Sky One! Great show!

Remove all prejudice against Ian McShane from your mind. I felt the same before. The guy will blow you away in this show. You also haven't been looking in the right places for your info about this show. This might change your mind: http://www.ruthlessreviews.com/tv/top10tv2004.html

Also, this months Uncut magazine says a few great things about it.

the story was a bit far fetched, but you gotta admit the first half when hes peeping through the window and then the car ride were pretty intense, romantic comedy, good none the less then just turned into tom cruises "Risky business"
not sure if i liked the part when the Pimp guy started punching lover boy
, was done quite well, looked very very real, reminds me off my fights
overall, nothing serious to begin with, still a comedy so twists and turns can be accepted.
as for euro trip, only good thing about that movie was
when the bro and sis started meeting each other
, not that i'm into that sort of thing. :p

I didn't really like this film, I found it to be a bit bland. It was a run-of-the-mill comedy, although I would still recommend it for the laugh

Saw it in the cinema and dvd arrived today.
Only watched up until the end of his speech on moral fibre because I had to go to work. Anyway, I haven't noticed anything extra from the cinema version, where are these extra unrated scenes? Towards the end?

It's a good film I think. Went to the cinema not knowing much about it and thought it would be crap but was nicely surprised. Some very funny parts in it.

  • It was awful!! absolutely awful...there were some funny bits in the film's first half but they were forgotten due to the sad sick second half...

What about Timothy Olyphant's character who suddenly changes from great guy to absolute scumbag psycho...what about the gutter ethics of high school students participating in a porn film?

    Their parent's condoning it?

    Yeah right...just dumb.

I checked the imdb external reviews and Ebert and the Guardian/Observer were also of the same opinion.

    Philip French of the Guardian:
"An unpleasant movie, uncertain of tone and intention"

I thought it was a good film, definately a mark above a lot of teen/romantic comedy crap thats been coming out. Course having elisha in it gives it a +100 on the scale.

I liked the twists + turns, and didn't see the end coming.

Ehhh.. I don't think the whole sex education video thing was supposed to be taken that seriously... was just there to add a twist to the film!

As for Tim Olyphant, i thought the way he turned nasty when Matthew stole Danielle from him was genius! He can play the psycho role down to a tee.

Also i know Placebo thought the same as myself but did anyone else think the punches he gave Matthew in the car were shot in a way that made it look really graphic?!

  • I don't agree ... I thought it was tasteless and it didn't impress me...but hey everyone's different.

We need more films like this.

We need more films where Elisha Cuthbert plays a filthy cockwhore.

I've only seen the unrated version but as far as I know the differences are small. I don't know if there is any extra scene but in scenes like the lap dancing in the cinema version (as far I know) the women were wearing bikini tops and in the unrated version they were topless. There are a couple of other scenes like that. Hope that helps.

I often looked at the ads and thought, "hmm that looks good, but its gonna be one of those typical teeney bopper crap movies that I wont like"....

I watched it last week and am well surprised!! Very good movie!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,466 ✭✭✭Blisterman

I was surprised too. It wasn't very funny and didn't have enough jokes. Too much of a mushy romantic comedy, without a funny character such as Stifler/Bluto/Spicoli to counter the romance. The guys friends were just annoying.
