if you like RHCP do what i did and get all the stuff they list as influential from the early days-alot of this is old L.A/D.C punk and it is very good! such as: BadBrains(superfast angry hardcore), Germs(bare, first LA punk band/pat smears first band), Gang of Four(excellent Brit punk), Fugazi(another excellent D.C punk band)
also check out the bands they cover; iggy, funkadelic, sly stone, the meters

as for similar bands; (as in bassheavy-nothing is really like RHCP to be fair) Faith No More, Fishbone, Primus, (maybe Jack Irons new record?), RATM, Janes Addiction (just their debut apparently)

and if you want superhuman bass; Jaco Pastorius and Marcus Miller

-this costs time and money-but its worth it ;):p:D

AS well as looking at their local influences you should look back real far to bands like Funkadelic and Sly and the family stone because flea is heavily influenced by their bass styles.

Funkadelic takes a lot to get used to though so be ready for some strange funk music.
