Was wonderin if dual channel would run in a 754 board ( irealise it would be just single channel).

I had a feelin ya could but thought i'd better make sure before suggesting this last piece in my m8's new pc :p

    Thanks

Apparently it depends on the motherboard wether it will work flawlessly.

That shouldnt be a problem. Dual memory dimms is basically just 2 Matched Ram sticks . Theres no fancy differences or anything.

It would be pretty much the exact same as getting two seperate dimms.

Motherboard and Ram compatability is the thing to watch for thats all (ie if it supports the type of ram).

[edit] On the MSI K8N neo (well actually i think its all AMD64 boards) there has been a problem with High FSB using 2 x Dual Sided memory sticks (ie 2x512mb dimms)...... As far as i remember it was to do with the memory controller on the die. Am not sure if this was sorted with the CG revision........ think the wall was 230mhz so it must have been (but still might be a problem or two after that).

Are there any hard & fast guidelines as to whether a dimm is single-sided or double-sided?
I know that as chip capacity increases, chip count goes down, but single/double is never mentioned in the specs in places like komplett.

AFAIK all the 256mb modules are single sided, 512mb double sided.

With the AMD64 its prob best to get 1x512mb over say 2x256mb for the obvious reason that its single DDR and you have more space for upgrade. I havent been on checking up on this stuff in a good while, been pretty busy and on holidays. From the looks of things the CG revision (all newcastle are CG's) seems to have sorted out this problem as i think there is a more buffed up memory interface on die.

(looking at some of the CG's round here with 2x512mb Ram they seem to not get the problem i mentioned in the above post, which is a good indictation)

i had the very same question some time ago, confused me quite a bit. basically there's not such thing as dual channel memory.

there are motherboards that support "dual channel mode" when there exist 2 RAM modules of exact same size and type etc. but not dual channel memory. basically the pairing of exact same RAM modules makes the memory dual channel in a way i suppose but nothing else...

Grand, just so long as I can still overclock comfortably :)

Ideally to be sure you'd be getting 1x512mb module first and then add another (or mabye borrow another to test) just to make sure. You will need a pretty high HT to overclock the 2800+ , Im not sure if the problem was fully sorted out or just partially helped.

It should have no problems up to say 250mhz which means running just under 2.3ghz........ over that im not 100% . If you got Pc3200/3500 Ram then a 5:4 divider is perfect for your setup....... muchkin L1 seems to be a good choice although might be a bit pricey.
