****ing bastards at apple should warn you not to format the ipod yourself :o

anyway. i made an active fat32 part and all seemed well, i transfered about 4gb of tunes to her without a hitch. i then thought i'd have a quick listen to them.
removed the ipod and it got stuck on the "Ok to disconnect" screen. reset it and a folder icon with an exclaimation mark appeared next to it.

so off to the tech support pages i went.
the answer seemed simple; download the ipod updater software and perform a restore.
of course, things never work out like that for me

after waiting for 5 minutes for the updater software to "initialise" it gives me a "can't mount ipod" error.
i'm guessing that this is down to my ****ty firewire card.

anyone have any ideas on how i can restore my ipod without sending it off to get repaired?

Why, oh why would you format the iPod yourself? Really, what drove you to do it? Do they really need to warn you that it might be a bad idea?

Try it out on a friends machine, if it doesn't work then, send it back...

ehm... i'm one of the people that prefers to download new drivers and install them rather than using the driver cd.
silly me forgot to run the update software first.
i'd just assumed that, seeing as it uses fat32, it'd be alriright for me to format it myself.

i'm hoping that my mates brother's pc has a firewire port, otherwise i'm screwed until my usb2 cable arrives

Did you try a rest. Think you hold down menu and the play/pause button. Resets the device to normal. I had a few issues with mine. Had to do that once or twice. Dunno if it'll help but no harm trying.

Just keeping holing the buttons down (10 seconds or so maybe more). Apple logo will pop up. Should hear hard drive resetting etc.

    aye halenger
tried messing about in the advanced options as well (hold back, forward and centre when the apple logo appears)
i reckon its definitely due to the the firewire card... i'll just have to wait a couple of weeks until i get my usb2 cable.

ah well, at least i can free up 20gb of hard drive space in the meantime :p

Could you borrow someone elses iPod (same model), take an image of their HD, and restore it to your iPod's HD? Don't have one myself, so not sure if it's possible..

i pride myself in being the only person i know that owns an ipod :)
i'll just use it as a backup hard drive until i get the usb cable tbh

I was trying to be a cheapskate and bought a noname Firewire card for about $10 in the States and I had nothing but trouble with my Ipod and Maxtor External Hard Drive. The IPOD kept freezing and I had similar problems to you with trying to format it.

By the way the Firewire port on the Soundblaster Audigy soundcard is crap as well so don't bother trying to use that if you have one.

When I splashed out on an Adaptec 4300 firewire card it solved all my Ipod and Maxtor problems once I reformatted both.

I'll take it off your hands if you'd like. At a good price too...

4g iPods come with both USB and Firewire cables in the box.

ANyway you should be able to get it sorted, friend of mine replaces the OS with Linux for the laugh and then back to a regular iPod and its fine.
