The best for value, features and basically everything is the iRiver IHP-140. 40GB model, about 800-1,000 albums of storage, lcd remote control, radio, voice recorder, text viewer and many more.

If you got him that he would think you're the coolest gal ever;)

It's without a doubt the best out there. Top PC magazines agree when comparing to iPod, Creative and other similar products.

Here is the cheapest place to buy it.

If you can wait a bit, get the Zen Touch (I'm getting one for the car):

    (24hour battery life)

thanks for the suggestions. I think he mentioned the iRiver one before but I tend to switch off when he gets technical.
It's not his birthday for a month or two I just need to see how much cash I'll need.

I got an iRiver HP-120. Class machine. Not as big as the 140 but it suits me, 20 Gigs storage is plenty. Listening to it now as I've got it hooked up to the work PC.

Let me be the first to advise the iAudio M3. It has all the features of the iRiver, except its smaller, lighter and iaudio listens to their customers.

The brown M3 looks much better than an iRiver:Here

Did they fix the problem with the iriver that the shuffle is not really a random shuffle? The firmware for that was meant to be out when I was buying a mp3 player(4 months ago).

Firmware for iRiver should be out within a few days, they have released new firmware for allot of their other products in the past week or two so expect random shuffle, on the fly playlist, on the fly delete and many more to be new features of the iRiver.

I would go for the 40gb model over the 20 as you get twice the storage for just a little bit extra.

I do not know much about the two players mentioned above however the i-audio does boast better features than iRiver, it has no display on the main unit which for me would be a major problem having to carry the remote everywhere. The iRiver comes with an lcd remote. I rarely use it but I will use it when cycling or any other activity.
