For ?200 i'd say a Radeon 9800pro as i hear nothing but good things about it.

Saying that i hear it gives poor performance (but new drivers are helping) in Doom3 but excels in most other games.

Best bet is Peats if your not buying online. You can get a 9800Pro for less then 200 online now, i'd say you'd get a 9600XT in peats for 170/180ish, which is not a bad card. Personally, i'd order a Sapphire 9800Pro from komplett with DHL delivery for 240euro and wait the two days to get a better card for the money.

128MB 9800 pro will give you about 40-60 frames/sec being slightly overclocked. This is at Medium quality, 1024 x 768, no AA, no AF.

This might seem conservative, but it looks beautiful at these settings, you wont be disappointed. High & Ultra detail settings mostly relate to how they compress the textures, AF & sounds processing. With a 128 card you should be using Medium, if you go higher you start to rely on the graphics card using system memory to augment itself.

    would this suit?

I dunno what would suit but I did think that 256 would be the way to go, yet you recommend 128. Radeons seem to be the best then yes? The 256 is €170, why not that savemejebus?

no 9600XT wont cut it for doom 3 you will be dissapointed, the best card for that price is the Saphire Radeon 9800 pro 128, get it at komplett, Im running doom 3 at 1000 x700 at high detail (just about), you need to tweak the Doom cfg file and get the beta drivers to get good frame rate, but othe cards get destroyed by doom3 at that resolution.

On cheaper cards the 256MB Ram is pointless, as the ram is not great quality. The only 256MB cards worth looking at would be the 9800XT, the X800 series, and the 6800 series, or so would be my understanding. These are all well over the €200 mark though. The 9800pro [256bit/128MB RAM] is most likely your best bet.

oh and if you do get the 9800 pro dont over clock it when playing doom 3 it does not like it, its fine with everything else, but doom

I stuck on an artic cooling vga cooler and am getting a bit of an oc on my ati 9800 pro while running Doom - about 400 on the core, not much on the memory though.

Getting a respictable overclock for everything else apart from D3

I think the overclocking problem is mainly with people who modded theur gfx cards or got a special fan to replace the old one and then push it way up.

I'd imagine small overclocks (ie without modifying it) are fine. Least my 9700pro overclocked has given me no trouble.

    Wrong.
The 9600XT runs Doom 3 fine. My 9600XT 128mb is running Doom 3 at 1024x780 with high detail and every option turned on. Game runs like a dream, no slowdown and no lag. Just tweak the config to suit your system and you will be amazed at how well it runs.

It runs well cause the rest of your machine is a beast, in fact your machine is wasted with such a pants GFX card in it.

The 4.9s.. Done a world of good.. Not so much increased the max framerates but there is no jumpy bits at the beginning of a new level.

Yup pretty much on the ball . Higer resolutions / settings may need extra memory but the fact that the card has more doesent mean the GPU is up to the task.

Generally the only card that might take advantage is a 9800XT or above (although granted a 9800pro prob the same , especially when overclocking is taken into account)
