Why you using SP2? Its still only a release candidate.

Go to the HP site and download the drivers for your printer.

The driver are like 160mb in size! that would take absoutly ages to download on my 56k modem! any other ideas?

Seriously, mate, SP2 is monumentally buggy (read this to see what I mean) and it is only a release candidate - Microsoft themselves are not planning to release it for a while yet.

I'd strongly suggest that you get rid of SP2 for now, wait until Microsoft actually release it, and then wait a couple of weeks for the dust to settle - by the looks of this one, it'll be a world of pain at least to begin with, let someone else deal with the inevitable teething problems.

    Just my 2c...

i have over 80gb of stuff loaded on my pc! i don't want the torture of ditching SP2 this soon! any other ideas other than ditching SP2? i like to keep up the latest programmes when possible especially an os!!!

There's no point updating things just for the sake of it.

Did you not create some way of removing SP2 before you installed it? Like a system restore or a drive image?

EDIT: Did you not have to download SP2? Its much bigger than 160mb.

I'm not trying to be smart, but when something is released as an "alpha", "beta" or "release candidate" version, you should be prepared for the very real possibility that it still has problems - by not releasing a "final" version the providers of the software package are (at the very least) saying "we're not sure yet".

Large companies like Microsoft offer "release candidate" packages primarily with an aim to the testing/early adopter communities - both of these groups know that the software probably isn't ready for a production environment (i.e. to be used all the time) and may do horrible, nasty things to your computer, and are generally speaking either equipped to get around the problem.

However, this particular update appears to have fairly deep-rooted significance, in that it may well change the face of how Windows operates. Thanks to Blaster, Sasser and the likes, Microsoft are changing from an "it'll be grand" approach to security to an overtly paranoid stance - this requires making a lot of significant changes from the ground up. This is an extremely significant move for MS, and is going to affect everything from the behaviour Internet Explorer and Outlook right down to the boot process and (as you've noticed) device drivers. Everything I've read suggests it's going to break lots of stuff.

If the SP2 installer offered a rollback feature (and if so, I hope you had the presence of mind to use) then simply uninstall the service pack; if that fails, try Windows Update for drivers for that printer intead of HP's web site; you might find a smaller install (with, undoubtedly, fewer features). (I am assuming your copy of XP is legally obtained here...)

Personally, I don't think this is a solution, however. You really do need to get rid of SP2 as soon as possible - and to try to find the patience to wait for software to be actually released before you install it?

    Sorry,

have a look in the event log (Start->Programs->Adminstrative Tools->Event Viewer) to see if there is more info about the error...it could be one of a large number of causes.
