I am doing a bit of thinking about where i want to go with my life and decided to maybe see the world and get paid for it.

I know a cruise ship is unlikely to see much of the world only the oceans.

But it will get me out of the place for a while.

I am just wondering does anyone have any expeirence of how to go about getting a cruise ship job in the IT area etc.

Do i need any special skills etc.

Any links or advice would be gratefull.

So basically you want to combine a job where you prodominately sit down and travel the world on a company's payroll. - Legend

Sorry 'bout the above post but you're a mad thing, genius like, much better than the sailor/labourer/merchant-dude methods. I have no links or that but appreciate the craic

    "Salary range £2100 - £4000 per month"

For basic Internet staff , does this not seem an awful lot?

Well considering you could go crazy from being on the ship for four months etc it seems ok also it's prob going to be full of OLD people so you're noting going to score(or maybe u like oldies) unless it's with one of the crew and then if it doesn't go out you're going to be stuck onboard with them!!!!
Oh wait they'd have to refuel wouldn't they?! Maybe they're paying that much in case you do a runner when the stop off somewhere....?

    Shipboard Systems Manager

Responsible for the day to day operations of AS/400 Windows NT/POS platforms while living onboard a passenger cruise ship.

The position requires a motivated self-starter with 1-2 years AS/400 and Win/NT experience POS knowledge a plus. The position requires living onboard a passenger cruise ship for four consecutive months, fluent English skills required.

Salary £5000- 6000 per month depending on cruise ship

Thats just sounds too good to be true, has anyone here registered??

I'd imagine the chance of getting a job is pretty small.

Sounds to me like they are a registered agency for the cruise ship industry,
like a recruitment agency, you pay your fees, they take your CV and pass it
onto the cruise companies when required, but as its a relatively small industry,
they probably make their money from people registering with them as much as
they do for providing staff to the actual cruise companies..

I know of a few people who've taken various jobs on cruise ships, usually cleaning waiting, etc.

Basic jist is that staff get treated very well. Free food, free cosmetics, hotel quality living quarters. However, you work your ****ing ass off. Guys I know worked 12 hours a day minimum, 7 days a week, with one full day off every 2 weeks. You're expected to give 110%, but you get paid accordingly.

Many, many people take their 5/6 months on a cruise ship @ £5,000/month, and then take most of the rest of the year off. It's a tough lifestyle.

All maintenance is done on board at sea and with the massive number of passenger on board ships there is always maintenance required.

Contracts are normally for 6/7 months on and six weeks off. Contracts are renewable.

"All salaries are normally tax free and food and accommodation are included in your contract.

Over the next two years there is a minimum of 42 ships being put into service so there will be a demand for maintenance staff."

I wonder what the deal with tax is if you're working on a cruise ship? Technically you're not in any tax designated area for most of your time...so do you pay tax at all on your earnings?

    Define computer systems builder... ????
