    terminally ill people who thought they could make a difference is my answer .

    of course im probably wrong .

    anyway the the actual plan to assasinate failed and it was by pur chance (and a bad choeffer) that the war started .

    in a way the allies started the war .

    And the really ironic thing is that Franz Ferdinand recognised that total control from Vienna was causing trouble in Serbia and the other territories, and had intentions to devolve power to these areas, including Serbia, to ease tensions. Shame the Serbians didn't know this.

    Serbia was an independent country at this stage so maybe you mean he was planning to devolve power to Bosnia-Herzegovina?

    Well Im going on the recent WW1 documentary that ran on channel4, to which he said that Franz saw the trouble brewing in Serbia as an example of (more?) devolution to each state?
