I would consider myself the biggest fan of basketball in ireland ,im infactuated with the NBA etc.All the reasons you have in the poll options are all relevant. Its all of those reasons put together. The state of irish basketball is very poor ,the superleague and national is a good stantard though, but the awareness of those teams is crap.Nobody knows of it because its all gaelic football in this country. The cup final is the only thing televised on RTE ,their should be a game reguarly on tv...People arnt playing it because its just hiding in the background mainly because the main sports are soccer and gaelic, that s what the kids turn to first..For example this is a irish site and there is every single bloody sport forum that comes to mind but there is no basketball forum

I played a lot of basketball, school, college and club but its just like any
other sport in this country thats not soccer or GAA related..

No funding, serious lack of resources and no promotion or the sport to young people..

Thats why the sport is in the state it is..

Ever week you see big write ups about young up and coming stars in soccer
and GAA in the newspapers but never a mention about the guys and girls who
have been invited to high school / college in the US on basketball scholarships
and the irish people playing pro ball in Europe..

Why would a kid want to play basketball when all the glory and positive light is shed on GAA and soccer...

When I was in school, we won the munster title a few times, an all ireland title, usually finalists in these competitions on a regular basis and had
to fight to get the funding to buy a new set of gear or a new basketball,
however, the school hurling team would struggle to reach the munster finals
and money was thrown at them, luxury buses, best of kit, training facilities,
half the school shipped off to support them when they played in big matches..

It was disgusting at the double standards employed...

more people like other sports , so those sports get more funding , which means it just terns into an endless cycle of not enough funding to get support , and not enough support to get funding .

I played basketball in primary school and hated the fecking thing , but I sure do love my Soccer , Gaelic football , Hurling and Rugby :D .

Personnaly I think these sports get more attention simply because they're better .

Where are kids supposed to play basketball?

I don't know of one public court near me.
I used to play in the local secondary school, but we used to end up being told to get out a lot of the time.
In the end we had to go and ask for permission to be in there.

In my secondary school, there was as much emphasise on basketball as any other sport but that's not the case in most schools.

So just because you think these sports are better means that basketball isnt
entitled to get more funding and be promoted more to give kids who dont think
the same as you a chance for something different..

Jeez, the intelligence of your arguement mate speaks for itself

well I was jokeing , but tell me why a sport that the majority of the country couldnt give 2 ****s about should get more funding thatn say....soccer .

I mean why don't we all try and promote tidley winks ? , It would just be the same as promoting basketball .

Sorry that this is a bit off-topic but i've been itching to watch the NBA on a regular basis for a long-time now. Does anyone know is there any channel that shows it and if that channel can be got individually to an NTL basic package without having to get full digital??

Im mad into the NBA and there is no package you can get.Im constantly looking to get the most NBA coverage i can. NASN on Sky digital [you have to pay tho] gives every second day or every day coverage of NBA fastbreak and reguarly will show flashback games every sunday of past great NBA games.Sky sports is the only alternative which is ok but im still not satisfied.Last season they showed a recorded game every saturday and later on live games every sunday ,i wish they will step up the coverage of games but the best show available on SKY is NBA action.

Basketball is a real great sport but its not available enough for the younger generation to find out.And "BIG EARS" its not about the country not giving two ****s about the sport its just the promotion of the sport. Some areas dont give a **** about it and some areas its real strong.Like in my area no one gives a **** about hurling but im sure down in Tipperary ,they give a **** about hurling , big ears.

Not one person here ever suggested that it should get more funding than
soccer or anything even along those lines..

If you read the posts, you would see that it needs more funding and
promotion within schools as people do want to play it but simply dont have
the facilities because of lack of funding...

There are some schools that offer a variety of sports to their pupils, from
GAA, Soccer, Rugby, Athletics, Hockey, Basketball... all types of sports which
is great if you arent interested in one, you can move onto another and keep
doing so until you find one you like.. but they are few and far between and
usually the bigger ones with more money to spend..

As for the country not giving a toss about it, then explain to me why there is
a National Basketball Arena, a national basketball league, league Cup that
gets TV coverage and also countless national basketball teams for all ages..
Doesnt sound like a sport that people dont give a toss about to me..

It seems that your a bit blind to the fact that anyone could love a sport
thats not soccer.. open your eyes and look around mate..

Oh and while your at it, try and lose that small minded attitude you have,
there is enough of it going on in this country as it is..

I've never seen a scaled-size basketball court in Ireland. Whenever there is a court available, which is rare enough, it's always an adult size court, which is nigh on impossible for kids to play on. They don't have the strength to play into 10 feet high baskets or the stride to cover a full size court. Any kid that does try and play basketball will never learn proper techniques as the only way to have a hope in hell of scoring a basket is to fling the ball with all your might up in the air and pray. Soccer, football, hurling, etc. can all be played on any patch of grass/tarmac/cement and be enjoyable.
Sports facilities in general are atrocious in Ireland. There are no swimming pools, but hundreds of golf courses...

heh ive don't jushave an interest in soccer , I play Hurling Gaelic football and Rugby aswell . :p

Stalin how is it people like me who have no control over how sport is run in this country are damadging basketball , is it because I don't like it .

i think a lot of people here think im small minded because I play the big 4(hurling , soccer, rgby, and Gaelic football) and am not into a minority sport , because I can understand how people like other sports , I used to like basketball myself till I reached the grand old age of 8 , and didnt like the non-contact element of the sport (can be damn frustrating with people 'drawing' fouls by actually running into you) .

As far as I remember only the semi-finals and the final of the main basketball Cup competition are shown live on tv .

and ToxicPOh and while your at it, try and lose that small minded attitude you have,
there is enough of it going on in this country as it is.. addy please elaborate on: .

Is it just me or is Dublin the only place that seems enthusiastic about basketball ?

I've seen a scaled down public court in Galway. Can't remember the name of the town though.

The government isnt spending enough money, there isnt enough basketball on T.V or kids being made play it when they are really young.

The government isnt spending enough money, there isnt enough basketball on T.V or kids being made play it when they are really young.

The Government will only spend a certain amount of money depending on public interest , if there was more money in general to sport , im sure some would go to basketball .
If the profile and popularity of the sport was raised again they would get more money .(the thing is we all know you need money to get people interested .)

More T.V. coverage comes with more popularity .
i don't think anyone should be made play it , but to be honest I can't see how it isn't more popular as children are forced to play it in PE throughout most of primary school and some of secondry school .

Especially young primary school children(5-8) as this is the most common game they are made play .

Basketball will not be treated differently than any other semi-minority(its not one of the big four , but also not really a minority sport) unless it becomes more popular , and to be honest the government or television stations or schools shouldn't go out of they're way to promote the sport , as sports should be able to develope they're own interest .
