    Hi all,
I am thinking about switching from the contraceptive injection to The Pill, I have read that it can make you put on weight, is this true? The contraceptive injection is also reported to make you put on weight but I didn't experience any of that. I'm just wondering if it's true about The Pill because I know it contains oestrogen as opposed to the injection which only contains progesterone.

if you didn't put on weight with the injection, you're not likely to put on weight with the pill. there's alot of different types of pill, plenty of choice, and each will have different effects. talk to your doctor, who can advise a pill for a first time user. if that has any side effects, it is very easy to switch to another. i'm on the pill myself, and tbh i haven't noticed any side effects, apart from shorter periods :D

If you're already taking the injection you should be ok with regards to gaining weight but it might be an idea to ask for a mini pill such as Cilest as that only contains progestorone. Did you have any PMS with the injection?

Oh god yeah. That's why I want to come off it. It gives me awful mood swings.

Also with regards to the injection and it's side effects. Studies have shown that usage of the contraceptive injection "may decrease bone density and increase the risk for osteoporosis in later life". http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=PubMed&list_uids=12192229&dopt=Abstract

As far as the pill goes, side effects differ from woman to woman and pill to pill. Finding a good doctor would be your best bet, as quite a few of them are very slow to give good advise or put you on the right pill for you. There are a lot of things to take into concideration as to what pill you should take and there is a lot of hit and misses.

    Good luck,
    A.

to be honest i was on that pill and i put on weight and generally felt crap. it all depends on your body. if you don't feel right while taking a certain type go back to your GP and they can recommend another one.

I've been on the pill for the last 21mths and have had no side effects. No weight gain and like someone else said lighter less painful periods. The one I'm on is Brevnoir. Like all medicines reading the possible side effects on the leaflet can scare the ****e out of you but its very rare that women get the more serious side effects. The most important thing whilst on the pill ( you probably know this) is to check your breasts regularly for any lumps and get a smear done twice a year. Your GP will be happy to answer any questions. Also when you get you're subscription its usually for 6 months. They usually ask you in the chemist if you want to buy the six packs together or buy separate every month - its cheaper to buy them together -not a huge saving now.

One other thing - take your pill at the same time everyday and the worst pill to be late taking is the first one you take when you start back after the 7 day break.

get a smear done twice a year??
there is no need to get it done that often.

All women aged 25 to 64 should have regular smear tests. For women aged 25-49 it is usually done every three years. For women aged 50-64 it is usually done every five years. No more tests are needed once you are over 64 if you have had two normal smears in the previous 10 years. So, the test may be advised for some women over the age of 64.

If you smoke heavily or you have a history of thrombosis in your family, don't go on the pill. it really increses the chance of a clot. More than likely if you do either of the above your doc won't put you on it anyway.

I highly reccommend the pill, I'm on it 4 years and I've never had side effects, and it sorted out my troublesome periods a treat! :D

Like Drusilla, I've been on the Pill for 4 years now, and have never had any problems. I did put on some slight weight at the start, but I'm not entirely sure if that was due to the Pill, as my lifestyle became more sedentary around that time as well. However, the Pill regulated my periods down to hour. I can tell you precisely within about 2 hours when one will start, and it removed the horrible back cramp I used to suffer from.

I take Microlite, which is a combined pill of estrogen and progestogen. 21 days on, 7 days off, and has to be taken at roughly the same time everyday, with a 12 hour window to do so.

The only risks are if your family has a history of thrombosis. When you start you should have two smear tests done within one year, and after that, it's once every few years. Regualr breast checks are also required.

Ive been on pill now for past year i think..god its quite sacry ive been on it that long and now the only thing i'm worried about is having to come off it at some point :-( I went on it primarily because i was quite scary when during PMS. The first one was good but didn't help moods much so changed and its much better. I feel like i can be normal person again and its great cos u kno when period is.

I haven't had any side effects what so ever. people think my breasts are bigger but its prob just me growing naturally to be honest. i haven't gained any weight and its been good so far.

I usually take it in morning to help me rmemeber and set alarm. i heard sumthin bout a device u can get inserted into ur arm that is essientailly like pill (it's hormones etc) and u have it in for 3 yrs and if ur student its like 200 euro less than it usually costs. maybe look into that if this is for long term relationship?

I'm on the pill as well. I actually wasn't that thrilled about taking it at first, (artificial hormones...ick) but I had to for medical reasons so I didn't have much of a choice. But anyway, I'm on something called Yasmin or somesuch, it's fairly new. So far it's been fantastic- i've no complaints whatsoever. Taking it at the same time everyday is a bit of a pain, but you get used to it and I haven't morphed into a raving lunatic or a bitch on wheels, so it's all good.
oh, and as for the weight gain, no one i know on the pill has gained any weight really, and if you didn't after the injection, my guess is you'd be fine on the pill.
    good luck!
