Can anyone direct me to a guide to overclock my 9700 pro. It has an atric cooler attached. Is there software available that'll do the job for me? How for should I overclock?

Jus be warned, you will not be able to run your cards at such high speeds with Doom 3... I normally run my 9800 pro at 470/370 without any problems at all. I have to drop the core to 430 in Doom 3 to get rid of the white sparkles.. Something similar used to only happen with Far Cry.. Doom 3 seemingly leverages aspects of the cards that no other games do according to John Carmack.. He categorically said that overclocking your card will not provide dramatic improvements in the game..

It should be noted that all of the modern cards play the game very well, and benchmark scores should not be the be-all-end-all decision maker. Scores will probably improve somewhat with future driver releases, and other factors like dual slots or dual power connectors can weigh against some of the high end cards.

The benchmarking was conducted on-site, and the hardware vendors did not have access to the demo before hand, so we are confident that there is no egregious cheating going on, but it should be noted that some of the ATI cards did show a performance drop when colored mip levels were enabled, implying some fudging of the texture filtering. This has been a chronic issue for years, and almost all vendors have been guilty of it at one time or another. I hate the idea of drivers analyzing texture data and changing parameters, but it doesn't visibly impact the quality of the game unless you know exactly what to look for on a specific texture. On the other hand, the Nvidia drivers have been tuned for Doom's primary light/surface interaction fragment program, and innocuous code changes can "fall off the fast path" and cause significant performance impacts, especially on NV30 class cards.

A note on overclocking: it is very likely that overclocked configurations that "play everything else perfectly" will start to show problems on D3 due to new usage patterns. Everyone is of course free to do whatever they want with their own hardware, but don't complain to us...

Talking to John briefly about his overclocking comments made some things clear to us that many enthusiasts will need to be aware of. When he speaks of "new usage patterns" he is literally talking about transistors on some of new GPUs that are going to be used for the first time when you play DOOM 3 on your video card. So be aware that pushing your GPU MHz may get you different results in DOOM 3 than with other games.

    ATI TOOL 0.0.19

    Set up a new Profile
    Find max core
    Find Max memory

    and save

I messed around with overclocking last night. After some research I decided to use powerstrip as I read on some other forums ATItool was unstable (one guy said he left ATItool overclocking his card overnight and it kept increasing his core and memory until the PC shutdown  ).

I ran 3Dmark (3Dmark 200 SE) @ default settings (ie no overclock) and got a benchmarking score of 12541.

I then overclocked Engine to 357MHZ and Memory clock to 341 MHZ (o/c of 10%) and reran 3Dmark - Score 12926.

    My system:
    P4 2.5
    Abit BE7 mainboard
    512MB DDR 2700 RAM
    ATI 9700 pro

So how does my score sound?

Good to hear that card is working out for you Dave :D I could overclock it to 9800 XT speeds but did get some artifacts. Remember as said previously that if its Doom III you are overclocking for then it may be very unstable.
The artic cooler is a piece of piss to install, it comes with good instructions and a sachet of thermal paste.
Remember to set it to high cooling if you are overclocking

Thanks for the feedback Fitzgeme ;) No one could advise me better on the card as it was yours origionally. I'm going to send you a PM regarding o/c to 9800XT speeds.

i was wondering how the 9800 pro with xt cores perform with the bios flashed and an artic cooler attached with doom3. are there any artifacts? does it perform better and is it stable?
