DVD Burner not working properly

I recent bought a MSI DR8-A2 dvd burner from komplett. It will read cd/dvds ok but wont burn DVD's at all. It keeps saying that the blank dvd is full and cannot be written to.

Any ideas? Or will I need to return to Komplett?

I have one of these too, are you using the Nero that came with it or are you using another burning prog?
Also, what media are you using?

I think I read somewhere that this particular model can have trouble recognising blank media.

try and grab a newer firmware if possible. That should sort out your problems.

If it doesn't, search around for a hacked/modified firmware to see if that can help, but try origional manufacturer one first.

Nero is saying the same thing. Have found firmware on the manufactures website, but it requires a dos boot disk - which I don't have & I can't burn one for myself - catch 22!

Am using Datwrite classic 4.7GB general purpose 8x dvd-r.

This is the firmware I found http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/download/dld/spt_dld_detail.php?UID=575&kind=5

Thanks for your help so far.

Its virtually impossible to destroy a cd drive due to bad flashing, you can always just restart the flashing process again. However, if you screw up on a MOBO flash, then you can be rightly screwed. I'd be confidant that its a firmware issue.

The disk that came with the burner has a utility called (I think) live update, use this when you are connected to the net and it will go out to look for a firmware update and then flash the burner within windows, It's failsafe too IRC.

The live update utility only tells you that there is an update, you still have to flash it in the normal way through dos. That was the first thing I thought of - the main problem I have is getting hold of a bootable cd.

Might be worth buying some other media just incase it hates the datawrite disks. perhaps buying an individual verbatim disk just to see.

could be as smple as trying to put too much stuff onto a dvd if u try putting anymore than 4.36 gb onto a dvd nero will report the disc as being full and refuse to burn.

    Bond,
Do you have many of those DVD's? I've just bought myself a NEC 2510 and I'd like to see how it goes at 8 speed.

If they're useless to you, I'd gladly take them off your hands :)

I bought the previous version of this drive and had some issues, these where resolved with a firmware update. the drive was the DR8-A. My brother bought the DR8-A2 and is having the exact same issues as mentioned in this forum.. My drive has no issues now burning anything. My brothers drive is getting the above error plus an error stating that a 'complience test has failed'?

It is happening when burning files ripped with DVD shrink and then attempted to burn with Nero.

The media is verbatium 4x + R DVDs.. I still have to update the firmware on this drive so I will get back when I get this done.

I would be very surprised if the media my brother is using is the issue.
