    Hi,
There is something up with my gateway pc. It won't boot up properly, I'm not too sure what the problem is. It was fine until I took out the hard drive and it was left idle for 2 or 3 months. When I put it back in it seemed to boot up ok, but didn't recognise the HD even though it was hooked up fine. It couldn't install xp because it didn't recognise the HD.

Now it just wont get by the gateway screen.

Do any of you think you may know how to fix it?

I live in Bray, can bring it to you.

    How much would you charge?

    Thanks

maybe the hard disk got a bang and is now broken?
3 months is a long time for it to be out

Does it recognise the harddrive in the BIOS screen, as soon as you turn it on?

If so, it would be worth just formatting it and reinstalling Windows from scratch. Nice fresh clean install.

If it doesn't get picked up, check the jumper settings, check the cables, maybe check it in another PC to see does it work there (in case it's broken - very possible if it's been lying around for so long and sounds like it probably is).

I'm pretty sure it's nothing to do with the HD actually?... the HD works fine in my external HD case on my laptop

When you use it on the lappy didyou set it to slave or remove the jumpers all together. Make sure its jumpered correctly. Cable is fully inserted (the right way round).

The cable you using test it and make sure a CD drive is found works fine.

Eliminate everything then conclude HD is fubared :) But i reckon its just set up right.

it might well just need to be re-dectected by the bios. you should find a setting in the bios to do this.

or as was said it could be jumper settings. did you change any of the jumpers when you removed it to put it into your usb enclosure?

the most common cause is loose cables. re-seat both ends of the IDE cable and try again.

also if your HD jumpers are set to master, try cable select (CS) or visa versa if it's the other way around. it doesn't always work, but sometimes does, so you never know your luck.

maybe u connected it to the secondry ide channel by mistake and ur biox cant boot off a secondry ide channel i know this was a problem for older gigabyte boards it wouldnt boot and wrongly detected the hdd, just check its on the ricgt channel, it should be master on the primary channel or ide1 as its marked on some boards

or maybe its as simple as you put the ide on the wrong way around? can you do that??
well anyways red stripe on ide goes next to power cables

Hi, tried another HD, same problem. Could someone actually take a look at it please if they know what they are doing? How much would you charge?thanks

Well by trying another HD you narrowed it down to IDE controller.

Have you tried another IDE cable? Or even tried it in the 2nd IDE 9if there is one) I assuming your CD showing up fine take it out and place the HD in its place on the IDE cable.

That will 100% tell you where the problem is.
