Customising / Painting A Tele...

    Hey everyone.

I recently was *given* a Japanese Tele by a very very generous fella who doesn't read boards...

Anyhoo, it's got a black body and a black scratchboard. What I want to do is to paint (!) thin, dark grey lines down the body and I'm wondering what the best way to do it is. The aim is to get a pinstripe effect, a la the 1920's... ;)

Can anyone suggest the best way to do this? Should I bring it somewhere to get it "professionally" done? Or is it a matter of getting my hands on the correct paint, running masking tape down the body leaving thin lines of black exposed and spraying it?

If that sentence sounds totally ludicrous, don't worry. I won't do anything *completely* stupid just yet... :)

    Cheers,
    -Seán

There is one dude who does that professionally - and very well i hear, although i havent dealt with him yet (coupla guys on the boards say that he's reliable).

    what was that link...www.theguitarworkshop.net

He's based on the South Circular Rd i think, and apparently he's very good at all kinds of custom jobbies.

    Thanks Ancient1!

The site looks good, and they seem to do spraying alright. I sent them a mail just there, let's see if I get a quote...

If you're going to paint grey lines on the guitar, you'll have to get it sprayed with clear coats again. Not really worth it imo unless you're going for a COMPLETE refinish.

    Feylya,

Do you mean spraying it with clear coats is not really worth it? Or just the grey lines in general are not really worth it?

Also, is the clear coat spraying to ensure that the new "paint" takes properly?

    Forgive my ignorance! :)

I mean, imo, the amount of work required to put some grey lines on the guitar would not be worth it. If clear coats were not sprayed on top of the grey lines, you could feel the lines of paint more than likely and chances are they'll rub off with play, especially if the clear coat on the guitar at the moment isn't roughed up.
