Just a quick question, does a light source have to be in(or partially in) an image to cause lense flare, or could a light source that is essentially "off camera" cause flare?

as far as i know and from experience the light causing the flare is normally in the picture. all the examples i've found on my pics have been anyway

If you've got wide angle, you can get it from out of frame light sources (I've a sigma 15-30 - flare can be a nightmare) - but sometimes (rarely) it'll add to a photo
