Guitar tunings

i consider myself as a medium skilled player (not complete beginner if you know what i mean) i rely on a tuner to tune my guitar (KORG CA-30) to tune to the standard EADGABE and ocasionally DADGABE (drop-d) i bought some weezer and idlewild guitar books the other week and in the top left it gives different tunings.

    for example:

    Tune Down 1/2 step:

    1 Eb
    2 Bb
    3 Gb
    4 Db
    5 Ab
    6 Eb

now normally when tuning my guitar with the tuner i'd just tune until i found the string letter that corresponds to the string i'm tuning (eg. Low E)

i do the same process and tune to i find Eb, i can tune the Low E string to Eb
but when i try to tune the A string to Ab i can't find the Ab symbol appearing up top to tell me which key the string is in. its the same for the D string, G string.

i can get the Low E, B and high E into Eb, Bb, Eb.

how do i tune the rest?

Dunno about your tuner, it's strange that you can do some but not all. Try using the 12th fret harmonic as the source of your note.

Otherwise just tune to the relative strings next door. ie: tune your A string to Ab by placing your finger on the 5th fret of the E(b) string.

(Hey if you want crazy guitar tunings get a 12 string, the numerous whacky tunings you can get with them are just... mad!)

yeah, just tune the low E to Eb, then tune the A string till it is the same as the Eb string at the 5th fret, the A string will then become Ab.

then tune the D string till its the same as the Ab string at the 5th fret, the D string is now Db

then tune the G string till its the same as the Db string at the 5th fret, the G string is now Gb

then tune the B string till its the same as the Gb string at the 4th fret, the B string is now Bb

then tune the e string till its the same as the Bb string at the 5th fret, the e string is now eb

    now you got:

    1 eb
    2 Bb
    3 Gb
    4 Db
    5 Ab
    6 Eb

I have a Korg CA30, and it does this fine, even on an acoustic. Try changing the batteries, and use a different lead. Failing that, your tuner is borked, or there's something wrong with your guitar.

not really an answer to your question but i wouldnt really bother with those tunings its just every string half a step down which alot of bands tune to so that the singing is easier or the strings are easier to bend but playing the tabs without de tuning the guitar will sound fine but not in tune with the record i guess. those tunings arent really alternate tunings like drop d or tuning to an open chord for slide stuff or folky tunings like nick drake uses so dont worry about it too much

    Place capo on first fret.
Tune to standard tuning as normal.
Remove capo, and hey presto you're tuned to flat.

that's cool, but my nephew was here today and broke my G string

while we are on that topic of strings where is the cheapest place in dublin to buy acoustic martin strings (i'd use nothing but)
